Seven Florida Panthers Prospects To Play In NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament Regionals

SUNRISE, Fla. – Sunrise Sports & Entertainment today announced that the Florida Panthers will have seven prospects in this year’s NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament Regionals. F Nick Bjugstad and F Kyle Rau (Minnesota), F Corban Knight and F Rocco Grimaldi (North Dakota), D Eddie Wittchow (Wisconsin), G Sam Brittain (Denver) and D Michael Matheson (Boston College) will all look to earn an NCAA National Championship, starting on Friday, March 29.

Bjugstad (first round, 19th overall, 2010) and Rau (third round, 91st overall, 2011) combined for 75 points in 78 games this season for the University of Minnesota, while Knight (fifth round, 135th overall, 2009) and Grimaldi (second round, 33rd overall, 2011) combined for 83 points in 77 games for the University of North Dakota. Knight was recently named one of 10 Hobey Baker Finalists as college hockey’s best player.

Matheson, (first round, 23rd overall, 2012) recorded 25 points in 35 games in his freshman season for reigning champions, Boston College. Matheson finished second among all freshman defensemen in points. Wittchow (sixth round, 154th overall, 2011) played in 28 games for his freshman season posting three points for University of Wisconsin while Brittain (fourth round, 92nd overall, 2010) played in 13 games between the pipes for Denver University finishing 5-7-0.

The first round of the tournament will take place March 29 -30. The first day of the tournament will see Minnesota vs. Yale (2:00 PM, ESPNU) in the Western Region, Wisconsin vs. Mass-Lowell (4:30 PM, ESPN3) in the Northeast, North Dakota vs. Niagara (5:30 PM, ESPNU) in the West and Denver vs. New Hampshire (8:00 PM, ESPN3) in the Northeast. The second day will see Boston College vs. Union (9:00 PM, ESPN3) in the East region and the beginning of the regional finals.

The four regional winners will skate in the 2013 Frozen Four, held at CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh with the semifinals on Thursday, April 11 and the championship game on Saturday, April 13.
