Panthers By The Numbers takes a closer look at some of the
interesting stats that you may or may have not known about.

  Blackhawks 4, Panthers 0

1,175 – Might as well just boggle the mind right away. The 1,175 is in terms of days. As in the last time the Panthers hosted the Blackhawks. It was 1,175 days ago that happened, when they earned a 4-3 victory over Chicago on December 3rd, 2005. It will be awhile before Panthers fans see the Hawks on BankAtlantic Center ice againg the two teams open up next season in the NHL Premiere showcase in Helsinki, Finland with a home-and-home series.

4 – It took some dirty work for Chicago to score their first goal as Andrew Ladd poked the puck past Tomas Vokoun for his 10th of the season 3:07 into the first period. Set up in front of the net, Ladd took four whacks at the loose puck before it got past Vokoun’s right pad and past the goal line.

30 – The first period was close in a lot of categories for the two teams, but Florida held a distinct advantage in one area, face-off percentage. The Panthers held a 30% advantage over the Blackhawks (65%-35%). Gregory Campbell won all five of his face-offs for the Cats. Florida finished with a 53%-47% advantage while Campbell finished with a 77% on the night, winning 10 of his 13 draws.

25:07 – There were few whistles the first half of the game as it was a pretty clean game for the two teams. The first penalty wasn’t called until 5:07 into the second period as Nick Boynton went off for tripping Dave Bolland. From there though, the penalty doors opened often as nine penalties were called at the end with Florida picking up six minors to Chicago’s three.

3 – Heading into the final period of play, Chicago was holding onto a 1-0 lead but that changed as they scored three times in the third to put it away. Ben Eager gave the Hawks a 2-0 lead 8:32 in and then scored the fourth as he sniped a shot past Vokoun with 46 seconds remaining in the contest. Hawks captain Jonathan Toews added an empty netter in-between, scoring from just the other side of center ice with 3:50 left.

0 – One area of success Thursday was the Panthers penalty kill units. They killed off all five Hawks power play attempts and only allowed nine shots on their opportunities. It was the 26th time this season they haven’t allowed a power play goal and was just their fourth regulation loss when doing so (19-4-3).

5 – When you think of the Panthers leader in the hits category on each game, you think of Keith Ballard. Well he did lead the Panthers in that category with five, but tied with him for the lead came from the Cats leading point-getter from the back end. Jay Bouwmeester also had five hits on the night, with the big period coming in the middle frame where he dished out four.

14 – Talk about holding an advantage. Panthers defenders were all over the ice putting themselves in harms way in the defensive zone as they blocked 18 shots. Chicago on the other hand combined to finish with four. Campbell matched that amount by himself.

3 (part II) – Scoring what seems at will since the beginning of 2009, the Panthers were stymied by Hawks netminder Cristobal Huet Thursday night as he stopped 31 shots for his third shutout of the season. It was also the third time that the Cats have been shut out this season, all ending in 4-0 scores for the opposition (Boston – December 6th, Saint Louis – October 25th)
