Blackhawks Sneak Past Panthers 3-2
Cats Take on Rangers Tomorrow Night in Puerto Rico
CHICAGO - Florida Panthers rookie RW David Booth recorded his first NHL goal late in the third period, but that was not enough as the Chicago Blackhawks edged the Cats 3-2 in overtime on Thursday night at the United Center. Chicago forward Bryan Smolinski netted the game-winner less than a minute into the extra frame to give Chicago their second win of the preseason. Up next, the Panthers travel to San Juan, Puerto Rico for a neutral site against the New York Rangers on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 7:30 p.m.
The Blackhawks scored the lone goal of the opening period when Chicago F Bryan Smolinski found the back of the net on the power play at 4:04. Chicago took a two-goal lead when F Jim Vandermeer converted on a power play opportunity at 12:37 of the second period.
A little over a minute later, Vandermeer dropped the gloves with Cats LW Gary Roberts. During the tilt between the two NHL veterans, Roberts connected with several big punches before the officials separated the pair.
The Panthers lit the lamp when LW Rostislav Olesz netted his second of the preseason off a feed from RW Anthony Stewart, with exactly two minutes to play in the middle frame. Late in the period, the Blackhawks had a goal disallowed when the referees ruled the puck was kicked in by a Chicago F Craig MacDonald.
Former Chicago netminder Craig Anderson suffered the loss for the Cats, while Nikolai Khabibulin earned the win for the Blackhawks.
