Panthers Fall 4-1 to Capitals

With two meaningless goals late in the third period, the scoreboard didn't reflect the kind of game the Panthers played. A goal that was waived off early in the first period would have presumably changed the outcome of the game for the Florida Panthers who fell 4-1 to the Washington Capitals Monday night at the BankAtlantic Center. Early into the first period Joel Kwiatkowski had a goal waived off due to a high stick with a fluttering puck in front of the Capitals netminder Olaf Kolzig. Kwiatkowski eventually found the back of the net, but the horn never got a chance to sound.

The Panthers did everything right early on. They posted ten shots on net in the opening ten minutes of the game, but it was the Capitals who were able to score the only goal of the first period despite being outshot 14-10. The Panthers stayed out of the penalty box with only one penalty in the first two periods. Even when the Panthers tied the game 1-1 on a power play goal by Nathan Horton, the Capitals stormed back to score less than a minute later on Alexander Ovechkin's 12th goal of the season.

Drew Larman, called up by the Panthers on Monday, logged 10:48 of ice time in his NHL debut and he nearly scored the first goal of the game on a shot that just missed after squeezing through the pads of Kolzig. Larman has played 11 games this season with the Panthers AHL affiliate the Rochester Americans posting five goals and two assists.

The Panthers will look to improve their 5-3-1 home record Thursday night when they host the Montreal Candiens. The Panthers split two meetings vs. the Canadiens at the BankAtlantic Center last season
