Red and White and Gold All Over
By Brian Goldman

“There’s no place like home”

This phrase made famous in the Wizard of Oz is never truer then when it comes to international competition.

The National Hockey League has become an international business, with players coming from countries from all around the globe. While the goal of every player, coach and executive in the NHL is to raise Lord Stanley’s Cup, each year some players don the colors of their home country to compete in the World Hockey Championship.

This year’s World Championship takes place in Moscow, Russia and began on April 27. One of the principal architects of Team Canada’s squad was Panthers General Manager and Head Coach Jacques Martin. Martin, who serves as the Assistant General Manager for Team Canada, owns extensive experience on the international level. He has served as an associate coach on Team Canada’s men’s hockey team for the last two Winter Olympic Games, including earning a Gold Medal at the 2002 Winter Games. In addition, he served as an associate coach on Team Canada’s Gold Medal winning World Cup of Hockey squad. Martin once again joined Team Canada as an assistant head coach in the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino.

“It’s an honor anytime that you are asked to represent your country on the international level,” Martin says.

This year is different for Martin. As a coach, the responsibility is to make decisions with the players you were given. As an executive of Team Canada in 2007, Martin along with Yzerman, are directly responsible for the players who have been chosen to represent Canada in the World Championship.
