Goldie's Playoff Blog: Anaheim & Detroit Provide Plenty of Excitement

Anaheim and Detroit could turn out to be the best Stanley Cup playoff series we’ve seen. They are tied at one game apiece going out to the left coast after the Ducks overtime game 2 win. Detroit took the opener, also by a goal, on a fluke goal in the 3rd period. These two teams have it all. Super goaltending in Dominik Hasek and JS Giguere, arguably the three best defensemen in the NHL, Anaheim’s Scott Niedermayer and Chris Pronger and the Wings Nik Lidstrom and enough offense to make it more than a defensive struggle. Perhaps most importantly, the Ducks and Red Wings both have the leadership and character needed to have playoff success. The undrafted Andy McDonald is Anaheim’s #1 center and the team’s heart and soul. In Detroit, Steve Yzerman and Brendan Shanahan are the big names that left but Kris Draper and Kirk Maltby remain as solid players on and off the ice. This series is what NHL hockey should be. We are lucky they are only two games into it because there will be a few more classic games. It’s almost a shame that one of these teams won’t play for the Stanley Cup.
