Robb Tallas Goaltenders Hockey School

The Florida Panthers Summer Ice Hockey Camps finished its second week on Friday at IncredibleICE in Coral Springs with the conclusion of the Robb Tallas Goaltenders Camp. For the second consecutive year, former Boston Bruins and Chicago Blackhawks goalie Tallas was the feature instructor for over 30 aspiring goaltenders.

“I’ve been fortunate to take over this camp starting last year,” Tallas said. “It’s a great thing. There are lot young goalies that have real passion and are fans. To put together this camp is a great thing for kids to get coached and understand the game and how to become a goaltender.”

Throughout the week-long camp, Tallas taught goalies how to position themselves correctly in the crease to stop pucks. Extra nets were brought in and six stations were created in order for Tallas and his instructors to be able to teach each camper specifically.

“Each day we spend an hour and a half on the ice with six different stations going on at a time,” Tallas said. “The kids rotate through and each drill is very specific. For example, we have a breakaway station. Breaking the kids down into small groups helps them learn a lot better.”

While there is a lot of learning going on at the Goaltender School, the point of the camp is to have fun. Goaltenders are a different bread of player. Their role is very specific and each one of the instructors and kids take pride in playing that special position.

“Everyone has a good time,” Tallas said. “Hockey is a fun game. Goalies have to be creative and I want these kids to put their personality into it. Goalies are like left handed pitchers of hockey. I hope I’m one of the more normal goalies out there.”

Whether the young camper is putting on the pads for the first time or whether the camper is starting to put everything together and play organized hockey, every camper listens carefully to the instructions they are given and a significant improvement can be seen from Monday to Friday.

Starting Monday, Panthers players Stephen Weiss and Gregory Campbell along with Cats Goaltending Coach Pierre Groulx will run the Panthers Developmental Camp. The kids attending the final week of the Panthers hockey school will be the most experienced and the kids who are teetering on playing high school and college hockey. With the instruction the kids will get starting Monday from two NHL players and a coach will go a long way in helping the kids become better hockey players.
