Globke Hopes For A Big Year
By Dave Joseph for floridapanthers.com

Five years after being drafted by the Panthers, and three years after graduating from Notre Dame, Rob Globke believes he has reached a “pivotal” point in his development.

“This is going to be a big year for me,” said the Michigan native. “It’s kind of a make-or-break year.”

Globke has spent the past two seasons shuttling between South Florida and Rochester, N.Y., playing 37 games in a Pannther jersey but spending most of his time playing for the club’s American Hockey League affiliate in upstate New York.

While GM and coach Jacques Martin has liked Globke’s development over the past two seasons – the way he’s been able to “step in to play when called upon” – the 24-year-old Globke wants to continue improving his game and his time in South Florida.

A native of West Bloomfield, Mich., Globke became the highest drafted player in Notre Dame history when the Panthers selected him in the second round (40th overall pick) of the ’02 Entry Draft. Globke admitted he considered leaving Notre Dame after he was drafted. But with his father being a school teacher and his mother a doctor, “I promised them I’d finish all four years.”

Globke’s 2004-05 season was spent in the American Hockey League and East Coast Hockey League. He made his debut with the Rochester Americans in 2005-06, scoring six goals in 52 games. That same season he played 18 games with the Panthers, scoring his first and only NHL goal Feb. 4 at Atlanta.

An alternate captain for the Fightning Irish, Globke was known for his offensive presence at Notre Dame and his ability to take over a game. After having an assist in 19 games with the Panthers last season and seven goals in 48 games with Rochester, Globke said his off-season has been spent working to improve his game and production.

"You always have to improve something,” said the 6-2, 208-pound winger. “I’m skating and training right now and there’s some areas I need to improve on. I need to play more consistently and I think I need to improve on my style of play. I need to be a little more aggressive. I have to use my size.”

Globke was one of several Panthers who were called up last season from Rochester. That group also included Anthony Stewart, David Booth, Drew Larman, Kamil Kreps and Craig Anderson.

“We were all car-pooling together at the end of the year,” Globke said. “Rochester was a good experience for me. You work hard every day there and you realize nothing is given to you. You can’t expect to show up and it to be easy.”

But Globke wants to spend more time this season wearing a Panther jersey.

“If I don’t make the team out of (training) camp, I’m not saying it’s going to be the end of the world,” Globke said. “I’ll play in Rochester or Florida, but I think I need a good year. If I play in Rochester, I need to be one of the top guys there. But you work to play in the NHL. That’s what you dream about.”
