Panthers Make Six Selections in 2006 NHL Entry Draft
Cats Select Frolik with 10th Overall Pick; Acquire G Craig Anderson from Chicago
VANCOUVER, BC - The Florida Panthers made six selections at the 2006 NHL Entry Draft that was held on Saturday, June 24 at GM Place. Additionally, Florida General Manger Mike Keenan announced that the team acquired G Craig Anderson from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Florida's sixth round choice in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.
With their first choice (10th overall) in this year's draft the Panthers chose C/W Michael Frolik. The 6-foot-one, 185-pound Czech Republic native played in 48 games for HC Kladno (Czech Elite) last season scoring two goals with seven assists and 32 penalty minutes. The NHL Central Scouting Service ranked Frolik second among all European prospects in their final rankings. He also won bronze at the 2005 World Junior Championship where he skated alongside Cats LW Rostilav Olesz.
In the third round, Florida selected RW Brady Calla with their 73rd overall choice. The North Vancouver, BC native played in 66 games with the Everett Silvertips (WHL) last year scoring eight goals with 25 assists and 52 PIM. He also represented Team Canada in the 2005 Under-18 World Cup.
With their 103rd overall selection (fourth round) the Panthers chose D Michael Caruso. The six-foot-two 191-pound blueliner played in 66 games with the Guelph Storm (OHL) this season recording 16 points (1-15-16). The Mississauga, Ontario native was also a member of Team Ontario for the 2004 Under-17 World Challenge.
Florida gained an additional fourth round choice when the club acquired Pittsburgh's 116th overall choice in exchange for the Panthers' fourth round choice in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. With the pick the Cats selected D Derrick LaPoint. The six-foot-two 175-pound defenseman played in 23 games with Eau Claire North (USHSW) where he served as team captain last year registering 32 points (6-26-32) and 34 PIM. He will attend the University of North Dakota in the fall of 2007.
With their sixth round choice (155th overall) the Panthers selected D Peter Aston. Aston played in 65 games with the Windsor Spitfire notching 52 points (16-36-52). With their final selection of the draft the Cats chose G Marc Cheverie. The Cole Harbour, NS native played in 36 games with Nanaimo (BCHL) last season going 23-9 with a 2.54 GAA. He has committed to play for the University of Denver Pioneers next year.
Anderson, 25, appeared in 25 games with Chicago last season posting a 6-12-4 mark. He has spent his entire NHL career with the Blackhawks playing in 56 contests, while also spending time with their AHL affiliate the Norfolk Admirals.
