Panthers Ink Ed Belfour

Two-Time Vezina Trophy Winner & Stanley Cup Champion Joins Cats

SUNRISE, Fla. - Florida Panthers General Manager Mike Keenan announced today that the club has agreed to terms on a one-year deal with unrestricted free agent G Ed Belfour.

Belfour, 41, has played in 905 career NHL games with Chicago (1988-97), San Jose (1996-97), Dallas (1997-2002) and Toronto (2002-2006), posting a 457-303-115 mark with a 2.48 GAA. The five-time NHL All-Star participant ranks first among active goaltenders with 457 wins and second all-time (Patrick Roy, 551 wins). Belfour has appeared in the Stanley Cup Finals on three occasions (1992, 1999, 2000) and won the Stanley Cup with Dallas in 1999. He is a two-time winner of the Vezina Trophy (1991, 1993) and has won the William Jennings Trophy for best goals against average four times (1991, 1993, 1995, 1999).

"Ed is one of the most successful and talented goaltenders in the National Hockey League. It was our goal to add more depth at the goaltending position and we feel we have sufficiently addressed this area with the acquisitions of Ed, Alex Auld and Craig Anderson during the off-season" Keenan said. "These three players will provide us with a solid base in goal within our club, along with Jean-Marc Pelletier and David Shantz. Additionally, Ed's wealth of playing experience will be an added asset for our organization."

The Carman, Manitoba native has recorded 75 career NHL shutouts, tied for first among active goaltenders along with New Jersey's Martin Brodeur. He places third among the league's all-time netminders with 88 career playoff wins and fifth with 14 postseason shutouts.

During his rookie campaign (1990-91), Belfour led all NHL goaltenders in games played (74), wins (43), minutes (4,127) and goals against average (2.47). For his efforts, he was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team and won the Calder Memorial Trophy. In 2002, Belfour won a Gold Medal with Team Canada in the Winter Olympics.
