Weiss Signs On For Six More Years
Stephen Weiss
SUNRISE, Fla. – Florida Panthers General Manager and Head Coach Jacques Martin announced today that the club has agreed to terms with C Stephen Weiss on a six-year contract extension.

“Stephen is an important part of our core nucleus of offensive talent and we are pleased to have reached a long term agreement with him,” said Martin. “He posted career best numbers last season and we look forward to his continued production and contributions to our organization both on and off the ice.”

Weiss, 24, recorded career highs last year in goals (20), assists (28) and points (48). Last season, he became the youngest Panther to be named assistant captain, while also recording his first career NHL hat trick on Jan. 13 versus Washington. Weiss also paced the team with 10 power play goals and notched his 100th career NHL point on Feb. 1.

“Stephen has taken significant steps in his growth process over the last two years and we believe that he possesses the tools to be one of our club’s top offensive threats,” said Martin. “By signing Stephen to a long term deal we hope that this serves as further proof of our organization’s dedication and commitment to bringing continued stability and success to the Panthers and our organization.”

The Toronto, Ontario native has played in 249 NHL contests, all with Florida, scoring 48 goals with 73 assists and 77 penalty minutes. He was originally drafted by Florida with their first choice (4th overall) in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

Weiss joins a growing list of players who own multi-year deals that include Olli Jokinen, Nathan Horton, Tomas Vokoun, Brett McLean, Radek Dvorak, Richard Zednik, Jozef Stumpel, Ville Peltonen, Ruslan Salei, Mike Van Ryn, Bryan Allen, Cory Murphy and Craig Anderson.”

About how Weis feels:

“I feel great. Florida is where I was drafted, and it’s a place where I want to win. I’m thrilled I can be with this team for a little bit longer. We’re obviously going in the right direction and building something that I want to be a part of. Hopefully, this is the start of many winning seasons to come.”

About Weiss’ thoughts on his contract:

“I’m very happy with it. You know it’s not the main thing for me It’s not about the money obviously, it’s part of it, but for me Florida is where I wanted to play. You know the deal made sense to me, and it’s where I want to play and win.”

On whether he got frustrated:

“I wasn’t frustrated, It was more of a learning process, and you just have to be patient with it, and you know, just learn. I never got frustrated, or down or anything. I just had to keep working hard, and I always knew it would work out for the best and it did. I’m thrilled!”

On Expectations:

“Absolutely. I don’t expect anything less of myself, so that doesn’t bother me at all.”
