A first-round draft pick (10th overall) in 2006, the 20-year-old Frolik is expected to compete for a roster spot in training camp. The 6-1, 185-pound left winger, had 65 points (24 goals) in 45 games this past season with Rimouski in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Frolik was a plus 13 with five power-play goals and four game winners. He added six points (two goals) in nine playoff games.
The Panthers now have under contract their top three picks from the 2006 Draft (Frolik, Michael Caruso, Brady Calla) and their top two picks from the ’07 Draft (Keaton Ellerby and Michal Repik).
“I think it’s great for the organization to get (Frolik) signed,” Martin said. “Now we have all our kids signed to contracts. We think a lot of Michael. We like his skating ability, his vision and anticipation. We feel he’s an excellent player who will help our organization for a long time.”
Frolik has represented Team Czech Republic in the 2006 and 2007 World Junior Championship. This past December, he played in six games for the Czech Republic at the 2007 World Juniors and had four goals with two assists.
Frolik is one of several Panther rookies taking part this week in Development Camp in Orangeville, Ontario. The camp, led by player development director Duane Sutter, is also playing host to prospects Shawn Matthias, Repik and Ellerby.
