Tanner\'s Take: First Goal
Tanner Glass, who gained a loyal following last year both as a  Panther and Rochester American with his gritty, physical play, will provide periodic updates during the season on life as a professional hockey play.

Glass split his time last season between the NHL and American Hockey League, playing in 43 games with the Amerks and 41 with the Panthers.

Things are pretty good here in Rochester. Winter isn’t as bad as I thought it would be at this time of year. Winter hasn’t started up quite yet, so that’s nice.

There’s an excitement right now around the team up here. There’s a new slogan, ‘It’s A New Day for a Rochester Tradition.’ There’s new ownership. They signed a couple of older guys to help the team. So there’s a lot of excitement around here and there’s a lot of excitement around the new coach. He’s come out of junior with a great record and he definitely has a great background. The guys are excited, too. We have a positive outlook on the season.

Last year, all those losses made for a long year. But it definitely feels like a new club, a new team, and a fresh start.

I felt I did pretty well in (Panthers’ training) camp this year. With the travel and everything I think it was tough to feel great at certain times. But I felt I played pretty well considering, and I had a chance to stay around after camp and practice with the guys. I feel comfortable at the NHL level and I think I’m close to playing there. But management and the coaches felt it would be good to start the year here in Rochester and work on my game, work on the speed in which I play the game with the puck and without the puck.

I think that’s the biggest thing that’s holding me back right now, the quickness factor and speed. As far as what I learned from camp? I learned I’m very close, I think, and I’m getting more comfortable with every NHL game. This was my second camp, so I was a little more familiar with the guys and the way camp is run. Overall, I’m pretty happy.

As for what’s happening in Rochester? We practice Tuesday and Wednesday and travel to Manitoba Thursday to play them Friday and Saturday. We travel back to Rochester Sunday and practice Monday and Tuesday.

So things are going good. I scored a goal last night. Got a pretty pass and managed to tip it in over the goalie’s shoulder. Unfortunately, we lost 3-1. Binghamton scored a couple of power play goals. That was early on. Once we settled in we played well and, hopefully, it will give us some confidence for the weekend.
