Bomber\'s Blog: Generating Chances
Former Panthers forward and current radio analyst Bill Lindsay will be blogging on on anything that crosses his mind.

Lindsay who spent seven seasons (1993-2002) with the Cats and played in 506 games and collected 165 points is now a radio analyst on 790 The Ticket.

Lindsay will always be remembered in Cats history for his series-clinching goal in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference First Round against the Boston Bruins in the '96 playoffs.

Well, I thought the effort was certainly there Monday night in Montreal. We’ve seen a lot of good things from the team in the first five games. We’re outshooting teams, which we rarely did last season. We’re getting up around 35 shots a night.

I know we’ve only scored three goals the past two games, but I don’t think that’s indicitive of what will happen this year. First of all, you’re not going to run into the kind of goaltending we saw Monday in Montreal every game of the season, so I don’t think it’s going to be a problem. We were 20th in the NHL last season in scoring, but now we’re taking 35 shots a night. The law of averages are that you’ll get three or four goals a night if you’re generating those kinds of shots. I’d be more concerned about goals if we were only getting 20 shots a night.

If you look at last night, it was the inability to finish scoring chances. If you give Nathan Horton enough chances, he’ll score.

I also think we’ll be able to generate goals with the ability of our defensemen. I think they’ll make it happen. You really do notice a difference with the puck-moving defensemen we have now. These guys have the ability to move the puck to the forwards in play.

We play Ottawa next and what happens there is you have to control Jason Spezza, Dany Heatley and Daniel Alfredsson. It’s not a real deep hockey club like you’ve seen from them in the past. All their scoring is generated through those three guys. And if we’re getting 30 or 35 shots a game, well, they have some question marks in net, so that should be a good bounce back for us.

I liked what I saw in Montreal. They’re one of the top teams but they didn’t generate more scoring chances than we did. And I think our defensemen have proven capable of control another team’s top lines.
