Panthers By The Numbers takes a closer look at some of the
interesting stats that you may or may have not known about
.

  Panthers 3, Islanders 2

50 – 5:41 into the game, defenseman Jay Bouwmeester joined an elite club with the Florida Panthers. Rifling a shot from the point past Islander netminder Joey MacDonald, Bouwmeester netted the 50th goal of his career as a Cat, becoming just the 18th Panther player to reach that mark. It was his 12th goal of the season.

1 – Teeing up a shot from the point with 3:07 left in the first period, Karlis Skrastins gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead on his fourth of the season. Where do we get the one from? It was his first goal against an Eastern Conference opponent. It was his second goal in the past six games (Jan. 21 vs Dallas).

10 – The Panthers did a good job limiting the Islanders shots in the first half of the game, as the Islanders didn’t get their 10th shot of the night until 8:22 was gone in the second period. It was a big shot however as Josh Bailey sniped a shot from the wing for his second goal of the season. The Islanders scored with 25 seconds left in Brett McLean’s tripping penalty.

4 – Richard Zednik was at it again, scoring his second highlight reel goal in the past four games. Playing the puck off the boards to himself, Zednik cut to the front of the net. With Brendan Witt diving to knock the puck away from the Panther forward, Zednik jumped over Witt and shot the puck past MacDonald while landing on the ice. Also collecting an assist on Bouwmeester’s goal, it was Zednik’s fourth multi-point game of the season.

3 – It only took three seconds of a penalty for the Islanders to get within a goal again. With Ville Peltonen in the box for hooking at 14:48 of the second, Trent Hunter scored his 14th of the season at 14:51 to bring the score to 3-2.

2
– Not only did Bryan McCabe hit the scoresheet twice against the Islanders by picking up the first assist on Skrastins’ and Zednik’s goals, but he also accomplished that feat for the second time this season. The other two assist game was November 21st against Boston.

8 Stephen Weiss has been hot lately. Picking up the second assist on Skrastins’ goal, Weiss recorded his eighth point (2 goals, 6 assists) in his last five games played. Weiss leads the Panthers with 27 assists on the season and is three away from setting a new career high in helpers in a single season.

15 – The Panthers held a distinct advantage in plus/minus on the night. The reason? All three Cats goals came at even strength while both Islanders goals were scored on the power play. David Booth, Nathan Horton, Jassen Cullimore, Zednik and McCabe all finished a plus-2 on the night.

14 – There was a pretty big disparity in terms of face-off percentage between the two teams Thursday night. Florida won 31 of the 54 draws (57%) compared to New York’s 23 of 54 (43%). Leading the way for the Panthers was Weiss with 75% (9 of 12) and Gregory Campbell with 69% (11 of 16). Bailey had the highest face-off percentage for the Islanders with 59% (10 of 17).
