By The Numbers: Penguins 4, Panthers 1
Panthers By The Numbers takes a closer look at some of the
interesting stats that you may or may have not known about.

  Penguins 4, Panthers 1

13 – The Panthers players were extremely active in the first period, dishing out 13 hits. That total was one more than Florida’s total in the entire game against Atlanta on Tuesday. The Cats outhit the Pens by six in the opening period with Anthony Stewart leading the way with three and newly acquired defenseman Steve Eminger chipping in with two. Florida finished with 27 hits in the contest.

40 – The Cats put 10 shots on Penguins netminder Marc-Andre Fleury in the first stanza and 40 percent of them came from Ville Peltonen (4 for all you non-math majors). He had two more than any other skater on either team in the first. The Panthers were outshot 14-10 overall.

11 – After being thwarted on a breakaway while the Cats were shorthanded earlier in the period, Radek Dvorak got his revenge as he put in his own rebound from in close for his 11th goal of the season at 17:49 of the second period. Ironically, it was also the 11th of his career against the Penguins (42 games). Dvorak had three shots in the second period.

24 – Dvorak’s goal hadn’t even been fully announced when skating up the ice, Sidney Crosby ripped a shot past Tomas Vokoun to tie the score at one. It was the Pens captain’s 24th of the season. Crosby had missed the previous four games with a groin injury.

800 – Setting up Crosby with the Pens goal, newly acquired Bill Guerin registered the 800th point of his career. Playing in 1,169 games, Guerin has suited up for eight different franchises (New Jersey, Edmonton, Boston, Dallas, Saint Louis, San Jose, New York Islanders and now Pittsburgh). Guerin becomes just the 135th player in the history of the league to register 800 points in his career.

14 – Tyler Kennedy put the Pens up 2-1, 2:24 into the third as Matt Cooke caused a turnover in the corner and then fed Kennedy in the slot for his 10th of the season. It was his first goal in the last 14 games.

2:13 – It didn’t take long for Pittsburgh to build a two-goal lead and it was again another turnover in the defensive zone that gave them the goal. A clearing pass was intercepted by Brooks Orpik who fed it to Kris Letang for his 7th of the season.

5 – The Panthers penalty kill was good once again, killing off all four Penguins power play attempts, but it wasn’t enough as the Cats lost for the fifth time this season in regulation when not allowing a power play goal. They are now 22-5-3 when that happens.

17 – The Cats had 17 blocked shots compared to the Pens 13. The leading shot blocker had five blocked shots as Panthers All-Star defenseman Jay Bouwmeester led the home team while Hal Gill had five to lead the Penguins.
