By The Numbers: Panthers 5, Blues 3
Panthers By The Numbers takes a closer look at some of the
interesting stats that you may or may have not known about.

  Panthers 5, Blues 3

500 – As soon as the puck dropped, it was official. Netminder Tomas Vokoun had joined an elite club, becoming just the 53rd goaltender all-time to play in 500 NHL games. Vokoun is the seventh active goaltender (Martin Brodeur, Curtis Joseph, Olaf Kolzig, Chris Osgood, Nikolai Khabibulin and Roberto Luongo) to accomplish that milestone. There have been 653 goaltenders to at least partake in one NHL game in the history of the league.

1151 – Just like other west teams, it’s been awhile since the Cats have seen the Blues on home ice. The last time? That came 1,151 days ago (37 months) on January 12, 2006.

19 – It didn’t take long for the Cats to get on the board, as Nathan Horton faked a shot, then snapped the puck past Chris Mason for his 19th goal of the season just 5:32 into the contest. Picking up the second assist on the play, Jay Bouwmeester registered his fourth point in the last four games (goal, 3 assists).

7 – Taking a slashing penalty 12:42 in - the Blues second of the night - Keith Tkachuk did the Panthers a favor. Holding the puck in the zone for the power play, David Booth cashed in as he rebounded the puck past Mason off a scramble in front of the net for his 22nd goal of the season and seventh power play goal of the season.

11 – At the time of the Panthers’ goal (13:46 in), the Panthers had dominated the shot count as they outshot the Blues 14-3. Florida held a 15-8 advantage after the first period of play, with five different Cats registering two shots a piece (Horton, Zednik, McLean, Stillman and Tarnasky)

48 – It took 48 seconds of second period play for Saint Lous to make it a one-goal game as a turnover in the neutral zone sent David Backes in on a 2-on-1 break. The Blues forward beat Vokoun top shelf with a blast from in-between the face-off circles for his 20th of the season. Apparently the Blues like the first and last minute of the second as they scored with 13.2 seconds remaining to bring the score to within 4-2. Backes did the deeds on that goal as well.

23 – Well it’s a new career high for Mr. Booth. Skating across ice in front of the goal, Booth wristed a shot past Mason for his 23rd of the season into the second period. That marker is now a new high, beating out last year’s tally in which he had 22 goals in 73 games. The two goals gave him 40 points on the year (23 goals, 17 assists), tying last year’s total. He would add another one later for his 24th.

0 – Well there’s really no telling if it’s a new record, but it could be a safe bet that Booth’s second power play goal of the night could very well be a Cats record for fastest power play goal. Technically there is no difference in the game clock as Gregory Campbell took a penalty at the 3:58 mark. Booth scored at the 5:58 mark just after Campbell had stepped back on the ice.

4 – In company of Panthers elite, Booth joined some pretty heady names Saturday night. On a two-on-one break with Richard Zednik, Booth took the cross-crease feed from Zednik and deposited it past Mason for his third of the night. It was Booth’s second hat trick of the season (November 9th vs Anaheim). He became the fourth Panther to record two hat tricks in a season (Ray Sheppard, Pavel Bure and Olli Jokinen). Booth added an assist on Horton’s goal giving him a four point night, his most points in a game of his career.

75 – We’ll throw another stat Booth’s way just because he deserves it. The Panthers second-year forward scored three times. He only took four shots on the night. That constitutes a 75% shooting percentage. Horton and Radek Dvorak (fourth Panthers goal) had a 50% shooting percentage.
