Panthers By The Numbers takes a closer look at some of the
interesting stats that you may or may have not known about.

32 – There was a lot of back-and-forth action in the opening period of play as Florida and Atlanta combined to pepper the goalies with 32 shots on net. The Thrashers held a four shot advantage, outshooting the Panthers 18-14. Jay Bouwmeester led the Cats with three shots while Colby Armstrong and Rich Peverley were the tops for the Thrashers with three a piece.

71 – Atlanta dominated in the face-off circle in the first 20, winning 71% of the draws against the Panthers (15 of 21). Todd White and Marty Reasoner won all four of their face-offs while Peverley went five out of seven. No Panther was above 50%.

143 – Peverley was a busy man the first half of the game. After a great first period, he followed it up with a fantastic start in the second. Skating up the middle of the ice, Peverley took a shot that got past Craig Anderson for his 13th of the season 2:23 into the middle frame (143 seconds).

24 – Following his own rebound, Gregory Campbell backhanded the shot over Johan Hedberg and into the top of the net 6:17 into the second period to knot the score at one. The goal was Campbell’s 13th of the season and first in 24 games.

2 – When you’re on, you’re on. Peverley did it again for the Thrashers, giving them the lead as he took the feed from Slava Kozlov, turned, walked in and beat Anderson with a wrist shot for his second of the night 11:06 into the third period. It was his second multi-goal game of the season (February 28 vs Carolina).

63 – Florida had numerous chances to tie the score, including some time on the man advantage, but to no avail.  Todd White salted away the victory by taking the errant past intended for Stephen Weiss at mid ice and fired it into the empty net, just past a diving Anderson who was trying to get back for his 22nd of the season with just 63 seconds left in the game.

97.2 – After being outshot in the first period, the Cats turned up the pressure on the Thrashers defense and Hedberg. Florida outshot Atlanta 11-10 in the second and 11-4 in the third but Hedberg stood tall stopping 35 of the 36 shots he saw (97.2% save percentage).

0 – Entering the game, the Panthers power play had been hot while the Thrashers penalty killing had been not. Florida had scored two power play goals in the last three games while Atlanta had ranked dead last (30th) in the league in penalty killing at 75.1%. The Thrashers didn’t give the Panthers anything as they killed off all four attempts (nine shots ).

11 – A stat you don’t often look at. But the Panthers held a distinct advantage in the takeaway category (13-2). Bouwmeester had four takeaways to lead the Cats while Weiss and Campbell had two apiece.

5 – The Panthers were led by Nathan Horton and Cory Stillman in the shot count as they both registered five shots each. Of the five shots, three was a high for a period for the duo with Horton’s three coming in the second and Stillman’s three shots in the third.
