Using The Power Play To Make Short Work
Friday, 05.01.2009 / 5:03 PM / World Championships
USA 6 – France 2 ::: It was a game dominated by the power play and penalty kill. Five of the eight goals scored came off the man advantage as the United States skated away with a huge 6-2 victory over France.
It wasn’t even a close game as the United States struck early and often, largely in part to their power play. The Islanders rookie Kyle Okposo got the Americans on the board with a power play tally just 4:02 in. David Backes (Saint Louis) made it 2-0 off another man advantage goal at the 10:38 mark.
Up 2-0 after one period of play, Ryan Shannon (Ottawa) connected for his third of the tournament 4:51 into the second. Okposo then set up the Cats Keith Ballard for his first of the championships 7:29 in, running the United States lead to 4-0.
France would make it interesting as they scored two out of the next three goals during a 2:06 span midway through the middle period. Yorick Treille beat Phoenix’s Al Montoya, who was making his World Championship debut, 9:41 in while the French were on the power play. Edmonton’s Patrick O’Sullivan remained hot, netting his fourth of the tourney 50 seconds later at the 10:31 mark. France’s Pierre Edouard Bellemare finished out the scoring during that span as well as the period when his power play goal brought the score to 5-2 with 8:13 left.
The United States would score the only goal of the third, thanks to the man advantage as Los Angeles’ Jack Johnson found the back of the net (4th of tournament) 9:55 in.
The United States, who is in a battle with Russia for first in Group E faces them on Saturday.
Ballard finished with the goal on three shots and was a plus-2 while on the ice for 14:31.
