MY360: The Golden State
While our Panthers prepare for a big divisional game against Atlanta tonight, I’m in California for the next few days for the NHL Board of Governors meeting and to catch up with some of our contacts on the entertainment side of our business.

Governor Stu Siegel and Alternate Governor Cliff Viner are with me and attending their first BOG meeting since becoming Co-Managing Partners of the Florida Panthers organization. Also with us is Alternate Governor Bill Torrey, as well as Vice President of Event Programming Sid Greenfeig, who is working hard to book more big shows for the BankAtlantic Center, and to let our entertainment contacts out in California know that we appreciate their support and we’re thinking about them, even during the holidays.

I know what you’re thinking, with an upcoming schedule that includes Dane Cook, Bon Jovi, Taylor Swift, Jay-Z, John Mayer, Eric Clapton and more, is there even room for more Internationally-renowned artists to perform at the BankAtlantic Center? The answer is, as long as there are open dates, we are going to try and fill them.

We’ve made a commitment to the South Florida community to bring elite performers to the BankAtlantic Center all year round, and Sid and I take that commitment very seriously, so expect a few more big announcements in the very near future.

On the hockey side, the Cats are coming off an impressive 7-1 win on Long Island on Monday night, and are looking to keep the momentum going this week against the Thrashers and Hurricanes (twice). We’re currently tied for the eighth and final Eastern Conference playoff spot with Montreal (sound familiar), with plenty of teams within a few points in a crowded postseason picture.

As you’ve undoubtedly seen, forwards Nathan Horton and Stephen Weiss continue to impress with Horton leading the team in points and Weiss in goals. Both are on pace to have career years and producing at a rate that Panthers fans have expected out of them.

If you’ve been following the BOG meeting through ESPN, TSN or one of your local outlets, you’ve probably heard Commissioner Bettman talk about how the salary cap isn’t expected to change much next year, depending on the strength of the Canadian dollar. That means teams that are playing close to the cap now, aren’t going to get any more breathing room, which could affect in-season and trading deadline moves as the playoff race becomes more clear.

The media also seems to be very interested in the Coyotes, as well as any potential discussions over dangerous hits to the head, so keep an eye out for that over the next few days.

That said, I’m hoping to find a place with the Center Ice package so I can catch the Panthers in action tonight, and I’m looking forward to being back at the BankAtlantic Center on Friday for another big game against the Hurricanes – our last home game before Christmas.

Thanks for reading, happy holidays and go Panthers.

ABOUT MICHAEL YORMARK
SSE President & CEO

Since joining Sunrise Sports & Entertainment in September of 2003, Michael R. Yormark has guided the organization into a new era of growth and success.  For his efforts, devotion and dedication to SSE and the Florida Panthers, he was promoted to the position of President on Aug. 13, 2007.

Yormark and his staff have worked diligently to build and re-brand Florida Panthers L.L.L.P. into Sunrise Sports & Entertainment, a first-class sports and entertainment company, and to ensure that the BankAtlantic Center lives up to its reputation as the “Center of it All” in South Florida. SSE serves as an umbrella for a diverse portfolio of operating entities that includes the BankAtlantic Center, the Florida Panthers, incredible ICE, Sawgrass Live presented by BankAtlantic and the Oz real estate development project.

Yormark has built SSE into a comprehensive company with its values rooted in innovative marketing and public relations strategies, first-rate customer and client services, aggressive sales and diverse revenue pursuits. For that reason, Yormark and his staff were able to grow sponsorship sales significantly in a touch economy, maintain an average attendance of over 15,500 for Panthers games, renew over 90-percent of season ticket holders on an annual basis, and sell out all premium suite inventory (suites and clubs) for five straight years running.

In addition, Yormark has overseen dramatic improvements to the BankAtlantic Center in the last few years including two Las Vegas-style outdoor marqees’ and two huge Lobby Vision LED boards inside the arena’s lobby. He has also spearheaded an innovative sponsorship activation strategy that included the creation of his Brand Activation Team and led to the development of the Publix Kids Korner, IT’s Sugar Sweet Spot and various other branded destinations that are the first of their kind in the professional sports industry.

Yormark has been consistently recognized for his and the
company’s considerable success through national awards and exposure such as the SportsBusiness Journal’s Forty Under 40 Award, the Stanley Cup of Business, the City of Sunrise Business Leader Award, the South Florida Businss Journal’s Business of the Year Award Nomination, profiles in Newsweek magazine, Sports Illustrated and on CNBC, a top 12 worldwide ranking for the BankAtlantic Center in Pollstar Magazine, an Arena of the Year Nomination from Pollstar and more.

Yormark has also dedicated considerable time to the South Florida community including acting as President of the Sunrise Foundation, sitting on the board of the Boys & Girls Club of Broward County and being a member of the Young President’s Organization.

That said, Yormark continues to expand the business and build the SSE brand through projects such as the expansion of incredible ICE and the development of the area surrounding the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise through Oz.
