Panthers Name Brian Skrudland Director of Player Development & Gord Murphy Assistant Coach
SUNRISE, Fla. – Florida Panthers General Manager Dale Tallon announced today two new hires in the club’s hockey operations department. The Panthers have hired Brian Skrudland as the team’s Director of Player Development and Gord Murphy as an Assistant Coach.
 
“We are very pleased to welcome both Brian and Gord back to the Panthers organization,” said Tallon. “Both are well respected throughout the National Hockey League and have a keen understanding of what is necessary to build a winning team. They have had successful careers in the NHL and will play an important role in the development of our players and prospects. We look forward to their long-term contributions to our club.”

Brian Skrudland
Skrudland, 46, served as the Florida Panthers first team captain, appearing in 256 games (1993-97) with the club scoring 32 goals with 67 assists and 401 PIM. He guided the club to the 1996 Eastern Conference Championship and the Stanley Cup Finals. Skrudland was also a finalist for the Selke Trophy in 1994.
 
Throughout his 16-year NHL playing career, Skrudland played in 881 career NHL contests for Montreal (1985-93), Calgary (1992-93), Florida (1993-97), NY Rangers (1997-98) and Dallas (1997-2000) registering 343 points (124-219-343) and 1,107 PIM. He earned Stanley Cups with the Montreal Canadiens (1986) and Dallas Stars (1999). The Peace River, Alberta native retired at the age of 36 after helping Dallas reach the 2000 Stanley Cup Finals. After his retirement, Skrudland returned to the Flames organization as an assistant coach for three seasons (2000-03).
 
Gord Murphy
Murphy, 43, joins the Panthers coaching staff after spending the previous seven years as an assistant coach with the Columbus Blue Jackets. A 1988 draft pick of the Philadelphia Flyers, was selected by Florida in the 1993 expansion draft. He played in 410 games over six seasons with the Panthers scoring 42 goals with 100 assists and 238 PIM. He was a teammate with Skrudland on the 1996 Panthers squad that advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals.
 
For his career in the NHL, the Willowdale, Ontario native played in 862 NHL games for Philadelphia (1998-92), Boston (1991-93 & 2001-02), Florida (1993-99) and Atlanta (1999-2001) registering 323 points (85-238-323) and 668 PIM.
