Amerks Fall To Hamilton In 5-2 Loss
(Rochester, October 15…) Despite establishing an early 2-0 lead, the Rochester Americans surrendered five unanswered goals to the Hamilton Bulldogs en route to a 5-2 loss tonight at The Blue Cross Arena. Former Amerk Head Coach Randy Cunneyworth earned his first win of the season as Hamilton’s Head Coach, ironically against his former team.

Clay Wilson (1+1) captured his third and fourth points of the season with a goal and an assist tonight, becoming the team point leader for the Amerks. These points continue Wilson’s three-game point streak for the season.

David Desharnais (1+1) and Ben Maxwell (1+1) led the Bulldogs’ offense tonight, each scoring a goal and dishing out one assist. Defenseman Yannick Weber (0+2) also earned two points in the game by assisting on two of Hamilton’s goals.

Netminder Jacob Markstrom made 26 saves on 31 of Hamilton’s shots in the losing effort.

Bulldogs goaltender Robert Mayer made 19 saves on 21 of Rochester’s shots. This kept the Amerks’ pucks-in-net three below, solidifying Hamilton’s win.

The Amerks got on the board first with a pair of power-plays goals from Triston Grant (1+0) and Wilson in the first period.

Kyle Kluberantz (1+0) responded for the Bulldogs in the final minute of play to cut the Amerks lead in half, resulting in a Rochester 2-1 lead at the end of the opening period.

Hamilton tied the score up at two just 2:56 into the second period. Maxwell delivered the puck past Markstrom upon passes from Brendon Nash (0+1) and Weber for his first of the season.

Nearly halfway into the second, at 9:43, the Bulldogs edged past the Amerks to take the lead for the first time in the game with their third unanswered goal. Scoring his first goal of the season, Centerman Desharnais took hold of the puck after a scramble in front of the net and fired it right in.

The Bulldogs went up by two goals over the Amerks in the third period when J.T. Wyman (1+0) buried his first goal of the season at 9:19, assisted by Desharnais and Ryan Russel (0+1).

Hamilton kept their hot streak going 17:36 into the third when Andrew Conboy (1+0) put away the puck, with Markstrom flailing on his back with the net wide open. This marks Conboy’s first goal of the season.

Rochester was unfortunately unable to respond to Hamilton’s charge in the last two periods, leaving the contest in a 5-2 decision.

The game marks the return of former Amerks head coach Randy Cunneyworth, who makes his first appearance in Rochester since last serving as Rochester’s bench boss during the 2007-08 season. The 7:35 p.m. contest is being broadcast live on SportsRadio 1280 WHTK and FM 107.3, Rochester’s Sports Talk. The game is also be televised live on Time Warner Cable SportsNet Channel 26.

Rochester travels to Hershey on Saturday, October 16th to complete a home-and-home set with the Bears at Giant Center. The 7:00 p.m. matchup will be the second get-together in a week for the AHL’s two oldest teams as the Amerks try to avenge their 4-3 home-opening loss to the Bears this past Sunday. Prior to the game, Hershey will hold its 2010 Calder Cup championship ceremony with a banner-raising, celebrating its back-to-back title win and third in five years. Fans can tune into the live broadcast on SportsRadio 1280 WHTK and FM 107.3, Rochester’s Sports Talk. The Amerks are 0-1-0-0 this season and 182-204-53 lifetime against the Bears.

The Amerks return home on Sunday, October 17th as the Adirondack Phantoms journey west to The Blue Cross Arena for an intra-state showdown. The 5:05 p.m. contest will be the first of four meetings between the non-divisional opponents and can be heard live on SportsRadio 1280 WHTK and FM 107.3, Rochester’s Sports Talk. The game will also be shown live on Time Warner Cable SportsNet Channel 26. Every Sunday night for the third straight season, as part of the Zweigle’s Family Four Pack, fans can purchase four tickets to a game, four hot dogs and four sodas all for one low price of just $52.00.

TYLER PLANTE UPDATE:

Rochester Americans back-up goaltender Tyler Plante apparently fainted on the bench during a TV timeout in the second period of the game tonight. After initial treatment from the Amerks medical staff, Plante was transported to a nearby hospital as a precaution for further observation. Plante was alert and conscious, but complained of slight dizziness and lack of strength. As a result, Rochester has recalled goaltender Brian Foster from the CHL’s Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs, who will meet the team in Hershey on Saturday afternoon for its game that night against the Bears.

“It was a scary moment for all of us,” said Amerks Coach Weber. “He was coherent and alert the whole time, but we wanted to take precautionary steps by seeking further treatment at the hospital. It was tough to regroup from that because all of our focus and our attention was on Tyler at that moment and not on the game.”
