Sunrise, Fla. – The Florida Panthers Foundation announced today that it has donated $400,000 to the Broward Health Foundation and its renovation of the Chris Evert Children’s Hospital’s pediatric oncology unit. As part of the renovation, much of the pediatric oncology unit will now be adorned with Florida Panthers-themed colors, designs and graphics.

The announcement was made today during a special ribbon cutting and reception at the Chris Evert Children’s Hospital at Broward General Medical Center in Ft. Lauderdale. In attendance representing the Florida Panthers were General Partner Cliff Viner, Foundation Chairman Stu Siegel, President Michael Yormark, General Manager Dale Tallon, Head Coach Peter DeBoer and Assistant Captains Stephen Weiss and Cory Stillman.

Representing Broward Health were Broward General Medical Center & Chris Evert Children’s Hospital CEO James Thaw, Broward Health Foundation President Michael S. Long, and Chair of the North Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners, Rhonda Calhoun.

“The Florida Panthers Foundation and the entire Panthers organization is thrilled to be taking such a significant step in the fight against pediatric cancer,” said Foundation Executive Director Rachel Brooke. “In working with the Broward Health Foundation to make this donation, we are making a strong statement that any child or family struggling with this horrible disease is not alone in their fight. Our players, coaches, staff, executives and the Foundation are committed to supporting them in any way possible, and the wonderful new Panthers-themed graphics in the Chris Evert Children’s Hospital pediatric oncology unit will serve as a suitable reminder of that pledge.”

“While the survival rate for children with childhood cancer has increased greatly over the last several years, cancer is still the leading cause of death by disease among U.S. children,” said Michael S. Long, president of the Broward Health Foundation. “We are incredibly grateful to have a committed partner like the Florida Panthers Foundation and the entire Panthers Organization who have pledged to make fighting pediatric cancer a priority. On behalf of our pediatric cancer patients, their families and the doctors, nurses and staff who work with them, we would like to thank the Panthers for this very generous contribution.”

The donation was part of the Foundation’s “Panthers Pledge for Pediatric Cancer”:
  • We pledge to donate over $250,000 to individuals and families affected by pediatric cancer.
  • We pledge to volunteer staff hours to assist individuals and families affected by
  • pediatric cancer.
  • We pledge to provide unique opportunities and once-in-a-lifetime experiences for individuals and families affected by pediatric cancer.
  • We pledge to cultivate relationships and create alliances with community organizations that are focused on supporting individuals and families affected by pediatric cancer.

The Florida Panthers Foundation has two pillar events remaining during the 2010-11 NHL season: the Foundation Golf Tournament on Dec. 13 and Bowling Event on Feb. 5. The Foundation’s first pillar event, the sold out Fourth Annual Face-Off Luncheon, raised $165,000 in support of the fight against pediatric cancer.
