Goaltender Jacob Markstrom during action against the Binghamton Senators. (Rochester Americans)
(Binghamton, NY)… It took all 10 shooters, but it was AJ Jenks’ lone goal in the shootout that lifted the Rochester Americans to a 4-3 win tonight over the Binghamton Senators at Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. The game was the first leg of a home-and-home series between the two teams and the first time this season the Amerks were tested in a shootout. The win gives Rochester its second win in three games as it improves to 12-13-2-0 on the season.

Defenseman Clay Wilson led the Amerks with a two-point (1+1) effort and Michael Duco scored his third straight goal in as many games with a single tally this evening. Rookie netminder Jacob Markstrom earned his ninth win with a season-high 45-save performance.

Corey Locke paced Binghamton with a two-point (1+1) night of his own as Robin Lehner turned away 29 saves for the B-Sens, who have dropped five of their last six.

Derek Smith and Jim O’Brien staked Binghamton out a to a 2-0 first period lead with the help of both its special teams units. Smith’s power-play goal put the Sens on top first at 7:09 and O’Brien doubled the lead over six minutes later with his 11th goal of the season with an unassisted shorthanded tally. The Amerks have now allowed an AHL-most nine shorthanded goals against.

For the third straight game, Rochester would rally back from a two-goal deficit, starting with Duco’s team-leading ninth goal at 18:00 of the opening frame that would jumpstart a three-goal run for the Amerks. Wilson and fellow defenseman Mike Kostka earned the assists on the power-play goal.

After 22 minutes of inactivity, newcomer Bates Battaglia brought Rochester back within one with his first goal as an Amerk at 5:36 of the third period. Just over two minutes later, Wilson converted on the power-play to give the Amerks their first lead of the game at 3-2, with assists from Chris Taylor and Michal Repik. Taylor, who tonight surpassed Gerry Ehman for eighth on the franchise’s all-time games played list, has now collected assists in three straight games and has seven in his last six outings.

The B-Sens responded midway through the final frame as Locke potted his ninth of the season to level the score at 3-3 to send the contest into overtime. After a scoreless extra period, Jenks secured the win for Rochester with the lone goal in the shootout.

Binghamton makes its way upstate on Sunday, December 12th to close out the two-game set at The Blue Cross Arena with the second of back-to-back tilts. Fans can hear all the action live on SportsRadio 1280 WHTK and FM 107.3, Rochester’s Sports Talk. The game will also be televised live on Time Warner Cable SportsNet Channel 26.
