Amerks Come Up Short Against Monsters

Rochester Americans
(Rochester, NY)… The Lake Erie Monsters built a 3-0 lead to cruise to a 4-1 victory over the Rochester Americans tonight at Quicken Loans Arena. The matchup was just the first of the season between the North Division rivals. The loss snaps Rochester’s two-game winning streak and drops it back into the basement of the American Hockey League’s North Division.
Patrick Rissmiller led the Monsters with a goal and an assist as Kevin Montgomery and Ryan Stoa each assisted on two goals on the night. Jason Bacashihua stopped 24 of 25 shots for Lake Erie, who now owns sole possession of sixth place in the North.

Michal Repik potted the Amerks’ lone goal of the contest, his second in as many nights, and Jacob Markstrom turned away 22 saves in his third straight start between the pipes.

Rissmiller gave the hometown Monsters a 1-0 lead midway through the opening frame with his seventh tally of the season at 13:13. Stoa and Montgomery each earned assists on the play, which jumpstarted a three-goal run for Lake Erie.

Justin Mercier doubled Lake Erie’s lead late in the second stanza at 18:31 and David Van der Gulik provided a three-goal cushion on the power-play at 9:43 of the final period with just his third marker of the campaign.

The Amerks would finally get on the board at 12:29 of the third with a power-play goal of their own. Thanks to back-to-back Lake Erie penalties just 16 seconds apart, Rochester’s power-play unit managed to take advantage of its five-on-three opportunity as Chris Taylor and Mike Kostka helped set up Repik’s sixth goal of the season to make it a 3-1 game. With the assist, Kostka extended his current point streak to five games.

Matthew Ford put the Monsters back up by three at 14:07 of the final frame with his team-leading 10th goal of the season, giving Lake Erie the 4-1 decision.

Rochester heads north of the border to exchange pleasantries with the Toronto Marlies on Thursday, December 30th at Ricoh Coliseum. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m. and can be heard live on SportsRadio 1280 WHTK and FM 107.3, Rochester’s Sports Talk.
