Panthers Alumni Association Youth Hockey Donations Top $300,000
SUNRISE – The Florida Panthers Alumni Association today announced it has donated $5,000 in youth hockey scholarships to kick off the 2011-12 NHL season, surpassing the $300,000 mark in total contributions to various youth hockey programs since the association’s inception in 1997. Additionally, the Florida Panthers Alumni Association also announced it will sponsor a table and Panthers alumni will attend the Ford Face-Off Gala Tuesday, Oct. 4 at the Hyatt Regency Pier 66 in Fort Lauderdale.

“The Panthers Alumni Association feels a responsibility to help youth hockey continue to grow in the South Florida community,” said Association President Randy Moller. “We understand, as much as anybody, that hockey is an expensive sport to participate in. But we believe strongly that money should not get in the way of a South Florida child’s dream to take the ice and play the sport they love.”

The most recently awarded $5,000 in grants benefit 10 different youth hockey players from four local youth hockey associations: the Golden Wolves, Jr. Panthers, Panther Alliance and Palm Beach Black Hawks. The grants help fund the cost of hockey, including ice time and associated dues. Awards are based on academics, community service, team play, financial needs and endorsements from youth hockey organizations.

In addition, the Florida Panthers Alumni Association will continue its support of charitable initiatives by sponsoring a table at this season’s Ford Face-Off Gala, a high-end fundraiser benefitting the Florida Panthers Foundation. Members of the Panthers Alumni Association, along with every current Panther coach and player, will be on hand to interact with fans at the black-tie event, which features a dinner, autograph sessions and auctions.

“On behalf of the Florida Panthers Alumni, we are extremely excited to participate in the Ford Face-Off Gala,” said Moller. “With the recent hiring of alumni Brian Skrudland, Gord Murphy, Craig Ramsay and Cory Stillman, we feel that General Manager Dale Tallon, Assistant General Manager Mike Santos, Managing Partner Cliff Viner and the Florida Panthers organization continue to demonstrate a true commitment to the alumni of this team.”

The Florida Panthers Alumni Association was formed to assist former players in their transition from professional athlete to active and productive members of the South Florida community. In addition, the association helps support the Florida Panthers Hockey Club with numerous community, youth hockey corporate and civic event projects.
