2. No Warm-up Needed: He didn't get the start and therefore he didn't get much time to warm-up as he was pressed into duty in the third period, but Jacob Markstrom came in and shut the door when the Islanders ramped up their attack. Starting netminder Jose Theodore who played in the first two periods but couldn't finish (slight injury) only faced 10 shots. Markstrom, on the other hand, saw 18 Islander shots. He turned aside all of them for his first NHL win. 3. Getting On The Scoresheet: After failing to score in their previous two games, it was great to see the Panthers get on the scoreboard four different times. While the Islanders got a goal early (just 1:01 into the game on a power play goal from Mark Streit), Florida controlled most of the period (outshot New York 14-5). A Kris Versteeg goal tied it up and then went ahead late in the second. Tied at two in the third, Florida got great work from the Kennedy line to score the eventual game-winner. |

1. Plenty of firsts for the Panthers. Jacob Markstrom earned his first NHL win in stopping all 18 shots in the third period, while Tim Kennedy, Matt Bradley and Shawn Matthias scored their first goals of the season with the first two being their firsts as Panthers. 3. Forward Shawn Matthias had a career game, factoring in three of the Panthers four goals (career-high three points). Matthias had beautiful passes to set up Matt Bradley and Tim Kennedy and then iced it with an empty netter after coming out of the penalty box. Matthias was also a plus-3. 4. Connecting on a first period goal, winger Kris Versteeg netted his fourth tally of the season. Stephen Weiss (lone assist) picked up his fourth helper of the season. For Versteeg it was his first even strength goal on the season. 5. The Panthers defense was stifling in the first two periods, allowing the Islanders just five shots on net in each 20 minute frame. 20. The Panthers combined to go a plus-20 on the night. With all of the Cats goals scored on even strength and the Islanders goals scored on the power play, it's an easy figure. Matthias and defenseman Mike Weaver led the way at plus-three. 12 different players had a plus-rating on the night. |
