MONTREAL (AP) - Jacob Markstrom made 40 saves and Scottie Upshall scored 5:02 into the third period to help the Florida Panthers extend Montreal's losing streak to six with a 2-1 win over the Canadiens on Monday night.

Markstrom made his second career start and recorded his second straight win, including an 18-save relief outing in a 4-2 win over the New York Islanders on Saturday.

FULL RECAP

"He's unbelievable. Great kid. For a young guy, it's tough to come into a building like this to start off your first win. He played great in the third period last game and to follow it up with save after save, especially late in the game too...He's like a Transformer. We're not sure if he's human or he's part alien, we're not sure. His roommate (Keaton) Ellerby always calls him alien on twitter everything and it's pretty funny. He's a great kid. He works hard. He's a gifted goalie."

- Panthers forward Scottie Upshall on Panthers netminder Jacob Markstrom.

1. Early Going Troubles: It's something that the Panthers have got to fix. For the third time in the last four games, a Panthers player has been sent to the box in the opening five minutes of the game. Each of those times, the opposing team has scored. In Washington, Marcus Johansson scored (4:24 in) with Scottie Upshall off for tripping (3:31 in). At home and against the Islanders, Mark Streit (1:01) scored with Upshall off for hooking (:22 in). Tonight, Erik Cole's goal (3:08 in) came with Tomas Kopecky sitting for two for tripping (1:31 in).

2. Great Pace: Tied at one after two and just three goals combined overall, you wouldn't have known that it was that low of a scoring game as the two teams took turns with the momentum on their side. Helped by numerous power play advantages throughout, the two teams combined for 23 shots in the first and another 28 in the second and then 21 in the third. Both goaltenders made numerous Play Of The Night status saves to keep the score the way it was for so long.

3. Markstrom Unreal: Jacob Markstrom was notified that he would get the start in a raucous Bell Centre just prior to the game. Any nerves that might have been with the Montreal faithful didn't seem to be as Markstrom litterly stood on his head the entire night. He did get a lot of help from his teammates but a lot of his saves (40 in all) were made for the highlight reel. Markstrom has now won two games in a row, his first two of his career.

Charles V. Mazza: Markstrom was simply magnificent! This is the future of the team, this guy will bring us to the playoffs! What a game! Theo just lost his job! From Montreal with much much love! Go Cats!

7. Scoring a power play goal in the first period, the Panthers have now scored seven power play goals away from the BankAtlantic Center. That is good enough for atop the league as they are tied with Colorado for the honor.

9.
It was an extremely busy first period in the defensive zone for the Panthers as the Canadiens posted 14 shots on net. Taking two penalties helped the Habs assault as the put up nine shots and got the goal 3:08 in.

17. The Panthers skaters were all involved in the offense. In fact, 17 of the 18 skaters registered a shot (lone exception being center Shawn Matthias). It was a balanced attack as the most shots came off the stick of defenseman Dmitry Kulikov (four). Forward Scottie Upshall (game-winner) and defenseman Jason Garrison had three shots a piece on the night.

24.
Getting their first power play of the night and trailing by one with 5:01 to play in the first, it took the Panthers just 24 seconds to knot the score as Tomas Fleischmann netted his second of the season from in close.

40. Montreal threw 41 shots on net but Jacob Markstrom was there to turn aside 40 of those shots. It was the most saves by a Panthers goalie since Tomas Vokoun stopped 45-of-46 in a 2-1 shootout win in Atlanta Feb. 25, 2011

Jacob Markstrom
Pretty easy and obvious choice in the selection of Jacob Markstrom as the Star of the Game. He made numerous highlight reel saves and earned the victory.

41 Shots, 40 Saves, .976 SV%

The Panthers continue their three-game road trip with a Thursday night meeting in Ottawa. The Senators who are 3-5-0 will be in Carolina for a Tuesday night game against the Hurricanes before returning home to host the Cats.
