Rapid Fire: Handing Out Some Awards

Sunday, 03.18.2012 / 1:37 PM / Rapid Fire
By Bill Lindsay  - FloridaPanthers.com
Welcome to Rapid Fire. Panthers broadcasters Steve Goldstein and Bill Lindsay will hit five different thoughts on a daily rotating basis. It's up to them as far as what topics they want to talk about as teams, and more specifically the Panthers, make a push towards the playoffs and the Stanley Cup.

Bill Lindsay discusses his five NHL award winners for the 2011-12 season.

1. Hart Trophy (MVP): Evgeni Malkin has to be the favorite as he has carried the Penguins this season. The penguins have been without Sidney Crosby for most of the year but the play of Malkin has kept the Penguins at the top of the standings. Pittsburgh has the two best players in the world. Just scary.

2. Vezina Trophy (Top Goaltender): Henrik Lundqvist will get the nod. After years in the running, the NY Rangers netminder will take home his first Vezina. He has been the best and most consistent goalie in the game. It will be a close vote but Lundqvist will get get his due.

3. Selke Trophy (Top Defensive Forward): Patrice Bergeron of the Boston Bruins has become one of the most complete forwards in the game and should win his first Selke. As of now, 56 points a +31 rating and he's over 58 percent in the faceoff circle. It's nice to see after years of battling concussion problems. It will be well deserved.

4. Calder Trophy (Rookie Of The Year): This one is tough but I will give it to Gabriel Landeskog of the Colorado Avalanche. He leads all rookies in goals (21), points (47) and shots on net (243). He seems to be the most complete player in the group. He has been a driving force for the youngest team in the NHL and has the Avs thinking playoffs.

5. Jack Adams Trophy (Coach Of The Year): Saint Louis' Ken Hitchcock is probably the Coach of the Year but the Panthers' Kevin Dineen will be a finalist. Hitchcock took over a floundering Blues team and it looks like they will win the President's Trophy as the top regular season team. They were the first team to clinch a playoff spot, sewing one up Saturday night in Tampa. Hitchcock has been the difference for the Blues.
