Rapid Fire: No Guarantee, Home Cookin And More

Friday, 03.23.2012 / 2:41 PM / Rapid Fire
By Steve Goldstein  - FloridaPanthers.com
Welcome to Rapid Fire. Panthers broadcasters Steve Goldstein and Bill Lindsay will hit five different thoughts on a daily rotating basis. It's up to them as far as what topics they want to talk about as teams, and more specifically the Panthers, make a push towards the playoffs and the Stanley Cup.

Steve Goldstein takes his shot at the five things he's thinking about after Thursday's play around the NHL.

1. No Guarantee: The oilers have drafted high for a few years now but it hasn't yet led to NHL team success because the kids dont have enough around them. The thought process is build through the draft and your patience will be rewarded. I think Edmonton will eventually be a good team but the plan hasn't worked yet. When the Panthers in the 2000's were picking high every year, the thought was it would lead to a solid team. Most of those picks are no longer around, Stephen Weiss being the exception.

2. The Net Has Been Minded: The last two games were split as Scott Clemmensen and Jose Theodore got the call once each on the 2-game, back-to-back games road trip. Both were super. Clemmensen beat the Flyers 2-1 and Theodore held the Panthers in the game, down 2-1 going to the 3rd period. Add in Jacob Markstrom's play earlier this season and the Cats have gotten solid play from the position many questioned before the season.

3. Sid Lost His Touch?: What's going on with Sidney Crosby? He had two goals in first game of the season but since then has played 12 games and hasn't scored. This is the point that you realize the sarcasm and I let you know he is the best player in the world at making those around him better. In the 12 games since he scored he has 17 assists and the Penguins are 8-2-2.

4. Home Cookin: The Panthers have won five in a row at home and have allowed just 8 goal in those games. This weekend is huge, two games, four big points. Hope the arena is full! This team deserves the support.

5. Scoreboard Watching: Buffalo continues to roll and is now one point behind Washington for the final playoff spot in the East. The Capitals were in Philadelphia last night, losing in the shootout while the Sabres are at Madison Square Garden to play the Rangers tonight. The Capitals finish out a back-to-back session as they host the Winnipeg Jets. Tough games for both teams. We can watch and have fun rooting...the Panthers need to take care of their own business and they'll be fine!
