2. Islanders Keep Responding: The Panthers almost made it through forty minutes of play with the 1-0 lead but the Islanders kept at it. They got their first two power plays of the night late in the second, including a 25 second five-on-three advantage. While the Panthers were able to kill off that advantage, they couldn't fully get through the second power play as Matt Moulson scored from the doorstep with 1:03 left in the period. The goal came with four seconds left on the man advantage. The Panthers would take the lead as Fleischmann notted his team-leading 24th of the year 9:51 into the third as his quick shot fooled Nabokov for the goal (SEE GOAL). New York would not get discouraged and would answer 2:31 later as Kyle Okposo sent a shot on net while on an Islanders rush. Coming back to defend a crashing Mark Streit, Dmitry Kulikov accidently deflected the puck past Theodore for the goal. 3. Sending The Thirds Out With Another Point: Scoreless the rest of the period, the teams went to overtime. Both had their chances in the extra session with the Islanders getting the best with a little over a minute left. With Theodore out of the net off an original shot, Ed Jovanovski had to play savior as his stick redirected Michael Grabner's attempt into the open net out of harms way. The shootout bug-a-boo came back to haunt the Panthers once again as Frans Nielson roofed a pretty backhand over Theodore and Nabokov stopped John Madden, Wojtek Wolski and Marcel Goc in succession for the second point. A miss at two points, the Panthers will still gladly take the point and add it to their season total for 87. It brings them just one point closer to the ultimate goal. It was the last time that the Panthers will wear their blue third jerseys and they sent them off with the players giving them off their backs in an effort to raise money for the Panthers Foundation in the annual Shirts Off Our Backs promotion. |
