By The Numbers: Sean Bergenheim

Panthers By The Numbers takes a closer look at some of the interesting stats that you may or may have not known about.

2011-12 SEASON FOR SEAN BERGENHEIM

1. - In his first season with the Panthers, Sean Bergenheim scored 17 goals. Coincidentally, his first goal as a Florida Panther came on October 17th against his former team, the Tampa Bay Lightning. With the team down a man, it was the Cats first shorthanded tally of the season and Bergenheim’s only one of the season.

1-2-3. - The left winger had a goal and two assists (1-2-3) on February 26th against the Montreal Canadiens. That game was also the only time Bergenheim had three points in a game.

2. - Bergenheim came up clutch in two games last year. He broke ties against Winnipeg on February 3rd and against Philadelphia on March 20th. The Panthers went on to win both games, 2-1.

Winnipeg was a huge win because the Panthers increased its hold on first place in the Southeast Division, and at that time it put them three points ahead of the Capitals and five points ahead of the Jets.

The win against the Flyers was their fifth straight victory at a crucial point in the season as the Panthers were continuing their push for the playoffs.

3. - In the last seven games of the regular season, Bergenheim failed to dent the back of the net. But it seemed like he was saving the scoring for his favorite time of the year, the playoffs. Bergenheim heated up nicely in the Playoffs, as he had three goals in the Seven Game series against the New Jersey Devils. He added three assists along the way. In comparison, the winger had six helpers all season long.

4. - The Finnish born player tallied 23 points last year for the Panthers. It was among his best point totals he has had in the NHL. To help him achieve that, he had two or more points in four games. The Panthers won all but one of those games.

5. - When seeing red on the power play, few on the team were as effective as Bergenheim. Bergenheim set a career high with five power play goals this past season, which was good enough for fourth on the team.

6. - Bergenheim came up big in the playoffs. Like stated before, he had three goals and three assists in the seven game series against New Jersey. That is a total of six points during a stretch when his line was providing the offensive punch for the group. His six points led all Panthers skaters in production.

6/7. - No one might have been as hot coming out of the All-Star break on the Panthers as Bergenheim as the forward recorded six points in six games from February 1-11 and seven points in eight games from February 1-15. He did his damage by finding the back of the net as all but two of his points came via the goal scoring variety.

17. - As you would expect, a career high in power play goals led to a career high in total goals. Bergenheim beat his previous high of 15 in which he set with the New York Islanders during the 2008-2009 season.

21:34. – Getting second and third line minutes for the majority of the year, Bergenheim’s average time on the ice last season was 16:24. His highest total time on the ice in a game was 21:34. Oddly enough that happened twice; against Ottawa on March 4th and Edmonton on March 23rd.

62. - The Helsinki, Finland native only played in 62 games during the regular season because of a lower body injury. After playing in 80 games the year prior, Bergenheim looks to have a repeat of that next season.

66.7. - On March 13th against Toronto, Bergenheim had his best shooting percentage of the season when recording more than one shot on net. He went two-for-three against the Maple Leafs as the Panthers won easily, 5-2.

109. - Bergenheim definitely wasn’t a player to shy away from contact. The forward finished sixth on the team with 109 hits on the season and had the third highest total among forwards and one of those comes with an asterisk as he didn’t collect all of his hits in Florida (Matt Bradley – 134, Jerred Smithson – 129).

185. - Despite in playing an injury reduced season, the seventh year pro posted a career-high 185 shots on net. That total was actually good enough for second most on the team, finishing 32 shots behind team leader Tomas Fleischmann who accomplished that feat in a complete campaign (82 games).
