Wade Megan has taken advantage of every hockey opportunity that has come his way.

The six-foot-one, 192-pound left wing began playing hockey with the encouragement of his father, Ron, who also played the game for Bowling Green from 1978 to 1981.

Megan, 22, played for Kent Prep High School, which has helped developed other NHL players, as well. Cristoval “Boo” Nieves, a top prospect who was chosen by the New York Rangers in the second round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, tallied a total of 78 points during two years at Kent Prep.

During his two seasons with Kent Prep, Megan scored 51 goals and notched 35 assists. Megan’s successes during high school earned him a scholarship with hockey powerhouse Boston University.

“There’s been a number of great players who have played at Boston University,” said Megan back in July at Panthers Development Camp. “I just have to keep working hard and do the little things right.”

During the 2011-12 season, his third year with the Terriers, Megan had 29 points off of 20 goals and nine assists, marking what many described as his breakout season.

“I try to work hard, as hard as I can, in the offseason. You know, get a lot of little things in – shooting, skating, stuff like that,” said Megan. “This (past) season I got more opportunities, too. I was able to get some more playing time, so a combination of those two things were the reason I had such a good year.”

Once again, Megan’s hard work has paid off as he was awarded the Terriers’ Most Improved Player title along with sophomore defenseman Patrick MacGregor. Megan, the leading goal scorer for one of the top Division I programs in the country, was also named as Boston University’s team captain for the upcoming season.

“I’m very excited for it…It’s obviously a huge honor for me,” said the soon-to-be Senior. “I look forward to the coming year.”

Megan said that, although he does not believe much changes in his role on the team, he will use his experiences as the team captain in his future career.

“Being in that role [team captain] is good for building character,” said Megan. “I’m going to just do the best I can with it and try to get a hold of the younger guys early and try to show them the way.

“I think it’s going to help me tremendously here in the coming years.”

The New York native was drafted 138th overall by the Florida Panthers in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. While attending the Panthers’ Development Camp in early July, Megan said his experiences with Boston University will help him in his future professional career.
