Rampage Fall at OKC, 5-3

OKLAHOMA CITY (December 15, 2012) -  Jonathan Sim recorded the Rampage’s first hat trick of the season, but Oklahoma City (13-9-1-2) defeated San Antonio (10-14-0-3), 5-3, Saturday night at the Cox Convention Center.

Sim became the 13th player in Rampage history to record a hat trick and was named the Second Star of the Game for his efforts. Sim’s hat trick came in his fifth game with the Rampage after signing a professional try-out contract with the club on Dec. 7.

Oklahoma City forward Jordan Eberle, who leads the AHL with 19 goals, also recorded a hat trick in the game and tacked on an empty net goal for a four-goal night.

Sim opened the scoring for San Antonio at 3:26 of the first period off a nice pass from Jared Gomes who was set up behind the net. The goal was Sim’s second as a member of the Rampage and second in as many nights. It marked the second straight game that the Gomes to Sim combination resulted in a goal.

Oklahoma City got the last word in the period, though, when Justin Schultz, who has 37 points and is tied atop the league leader boards with Eberle, struck on the power play at 18:53. Schutlz’s goal was also the second in as many nights for the rookie defenseman.

Eberle once again burned the Rampage at 8:55 of the second period when he made a nifty move around a Rampage defenseman and beat Grumet-Morris. Eberle struck again at 15:17 of the second period off a feed from Mark Arcobello.

Sim made it a one-goal game heading into the third period when he banged a puck home in a net-mouth scrum on the power play at 19:19 of the second period.

Eberle completed the hat trick 52 seconds into the third period on the power play thanks to another nifty pass from Arcobello, who had four assists on the night.

Sim answered back for the Rampage and completed a hat trick of his own at 12:29 of the third period after he banged home a rebound off an Eric Selleck shot to make it 4-3.

With Grumet-Morris pulled the Rampage applied late pressure, but it was Eberle who would ultimately end any comeback hopes when he scored his fourth goal of the night into the empty net. The goal was his eighth in six games against San Antonio.

Rampage netminder Dov Grumet-Morris made 20 saves off 24 shot in his first start since December 1st.

The Barons own the league’s best power play and went 2-for-5 with the man advantage on the night after the Rampage had previously held them to 2-for-18 in the first five meetings between the clubs. San Antonio ended the night 1-for-5 on the power play and won the shot battle, 26-25.

The Herd return to the AT&T Center to play their last home game before the holiday break against the Charlotte Checkers at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. The game will also mark an Express-News Sunday Funday at AT&T Center. Individual, and season, tickets start at $10 and can be purchased at the AT&T Center Southeast Box Office, by calling a Rampage representative at 210-444-5554 or online at sarampage.com
