RALEIGH, NC —  The Florida Panthers broke open a scoreless game with four third-period goals -- two on the power play -- and goaltender Jacob Markstrom made 33 saves in a 3-1 win against the Carolina Hurricanes at PNC Arena on Tuesday.

Florida's win halted a six-game winless streak (0-5-1), while Carolina fell to 0-3-1 in its last four.

FULL RECAP

"I couldn't let my teammates go out there without me and I want to battle with them end this slump and it feels good to have the win. I don't care how bad I feel, it feels good right now."

- Panthers forward Shawn Matthias who was battling the flu and scored Florida's third goal.

1. Nothing But Shots: In the opening two periods, it seemed like nothing would go in as the netminders came up with save after save after save. Jacob Markstrom was strong in net for the Panthers while Dan Ellis was even more impressive in the home net. Between the two, they combined to turn aside 50 shots. 34 of them came in a wide open first period as both the Panthers and Hurricanes recorded 17 shots apiece. Florida kept up the pace with 11 of the 16 shots in the second period but couldn't find a way to beat Ellis. Yes a lot of the shots were of the easy variety and there were a lot of one and dones. Then you can't forget both Carolina and Florida trading breakaway chances that didn't even result in shots as Drayson Bowman and Tomas Fleischmann put the puck high and wide but Ellis and Markstrom were on their games.

2. Three In Six: The Panthers could have certainly gotten discouraged with the way they have been struggling and playing against a hot netminder but they kept their pressure on the Hurricanes and were rewarded 7:39 into the third period. There, Tomas Kopecky forced a Caroina turnover and set up Fleischmann with a no look pass. The goal scorer was open in front of the net and slipped the puck past Ellis. The Panthers then used the power play to their advantage, first scoring on a 5-on-3 advantage as Marcel Goc redirected Filip Kuba's slap pass past Ellis at the 12:47 mark. Still on their second power play, a flu ridden Shawn Matthias went to the front of the net and put the puck past Ellis 1:04 later for the three goal lead. After being stymied for two plus periods, they exploded for three goals in 6:12 of the third.

3. No Shut Out But Streak Busted: The game almost under wraps, the Panthers and Markstrom were looking for the netminder's first shut out of his career and they came within 2:33 of accomplishing the feat. After rookie Eric Selleck, who was making his NHL debut, dropped the gloves with Kevin Westgarth but was assessed an additional minor for instigating, the Hurricanes worked their way up the ice on a rush. Jordan Staal swooped in and went top shelf short side on Markstrom to ruin his shut out bid 25 seconds into the power play. That was the only blemish for him and the Panthers as they added an empty net goal by Jerred Smithson with 53 seconds to play to secure the win. In his post-game media availability, head coach Kevin Dineen said that the players could breath a little bit easier as the team broke a six-game losing streak (0-5-1).

4. Getting three power play chances, the Panthers made them count on two of them. It was just the fourth time this season they scored multiple power play goals this season and the first time in almost a month (Feb. 26 against Pittsburgh). It was the first time they accomplished the feat on the road.

8. Scoring four goals in the game, the Panthers got point efforts from eight different skaters. Only one skater - defenseman Filip Kuba - had more than one point as he collected the first assist on both power play goals.

16. Posting a season-high 44 shots on net on Tuesday night, Florida saw all but two of their 18 skaters hit the shot sheet (defensemen Tyson Strachan and Colby Robak) Six skaters had at least four shots each with Shawn Matthias and Peter Mueller posting a game-high five shots a piece.

17. Making his NHL debut, forward Eric Selleck, who was stepping in for enforcer George Parros, really picked up the penalty slack as he posted 17 penalty minutes. The forward had 7:47 of ice time before picking up an instigator, fighitng major and game misconduct with 2:58 to play.

35. The Panthers posted a lot of shots on Carolina netminder Dan Ellis and it took a while for them to find a way to beat the goaltender but they did it, scoring on their 35th shot of the game with Tomas Fleischmann's goal.

Jacob Markstrom
Won for the second time in six games and bounced back from four not so great performances in keeping a tough Carolina offense off the score board until the final minutes of the game.

34 Shots, 33 Saves, .971 SV%

The Panthers will continue their season high five-game road trip as they head north to take on the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Thursday. New York, despite having a star studded lineup has struggled this season, posting 32 points (15-12-2) in 29 games. They did win Tuesday night as off-season addition Rick Nash netted the game-winner in a 3-2 victory over the Devils.
