2. Three In Six: The Panthers could have certainly gotten discouraged with the way they have been struggling and playing against a hot netminder but they kept their pressure on the Hurricanes and were rewarded 7:39 into the third period. There, Tomas Kopecky forced a Caroina turnover and set up Fleischmann with a no look pass. The goal scorer was open in front of the net and slipped the puck past Ellis. The Panthers then used the power play to their advantage, first scoring on a 5-on-3 advantage as Marcel Goc redirected Filip Kuba's slap pass past Ellis at the 12:47 mark. Still on their second power play, a flu ridden Shawn Matthias went to the front of the net and put the puck past Ellis 1:04 later for the three goal lead. After being stymied for two plus periods, they exploded for three goals in 6:12 of the third. 3. No Shut Out But Streak Busted: The game almost under wraps, the Panthers and Markstrom were looking for the netminder's first shut out of his career and they came within 2:33 of accomplishing the feat. After rookie Eric Selleck, who was making his NHL debut, dropped the gloves with Kevin Westgarth but was assessed an additional minor for instigating, the Hurricanes worked their way up the ice on a rush. Jordan Staal swooped in and went top shelf short side on Markstrom to ruin his shut out bid 25 seconds into the power play. That was the only blemish for him and the Panthers as they added an empty net goal by Jerred Smithson with 53 seconds to play to secure the win. In his post-game media availability, head coach Kevin Dineen said that the players could breath a little bit easier as the team broke a six-game losing streak (0-5-1). |

4. Getting three power play chances, the Panthers made them count on two of them. It was just the fourth time this season they scored multiple power play goals this season and the first time in almost a month (Feb. 26 against Pittsburgh). It was the first time they accomplished the feat on the road. |
