FULL RECAP

"You hate when you take a penalty and then they score on it when you feel like you let your team down but it feels good getting that one and getting the win. That’s a team it never gets old beating them."

- Panthers forward Shawn Matthias.

1. A Former Panther: For Florida, seeing former Panther Steve Bernier hasn't been a great experience. The winger was a thorn in Florida's side in last season's playoffs, scoring clutch goals and he almost pulled off the feat Saturday night as he netted both of New Jersey's goals. It took him 3:42 to get the Devils on the board as he tapped the puck past Jacob Markstrom after Stephen Gionta and fellow former Panther Ryan Carter set him up nicely with some neat passing to him in front of the net. It then looked like he would record the game-winner as he redirected Henrik Tallinder's point shot 7:57 into the third with the Devils on the power play.

2. Matthias Clutch: Why did the third period tally look to be the game-winner and it wasn't? That would be thanks to Florida's hottest point producer of late, Shawn Matthias. The forward answered Bernier's first period tally with one of his own. Set up in front of Martin Brodeur, he redirected Jonathan Huberdeau's pass past the netminder for a power play goal nine minutes later. Then with Florida pulling Markstrom for the extra attacker and after a face-off in the Devils zone, players crashed the net and Matthias cashed in on the rebound with just 27 seconds remaining for his second two-goal game in a row. The forward has been Mr. Goal Scorer for the Panthers, already hitting a career-high 14 on the season, including 11 in his last 16 games. What made the tying goal even more sweeter for Matthias was that he made good after the Devils scored the power play goal with him serving a penalty.

3. Overtime Winner Winner Chicken Dinner: With not such a great game the last game against Buffalo and then a turnover in his own zone to set up the Devils first goal, Dmitry Kulikov played the role of hero as he netted his first goal of the season in dramatic fashion. Florida had already battled back to take a point but for the second straight game, they earned the second with theatrics. While against Buffalo, they did it in the shootout (with help from video replay). Saturday night it was Kulikov who was finally rewarded. He raced up the left side of the ice but and went to take a shot on Brodeur but had the puck poked off his stick. After the Panthers kept it in, Kulikov found himself wide open in the slot and taking the feed from Brian Campbell deposited it into the back of the net 1:43 in to give the Cats their first overtime win of the season and just the second in the last two combined.

2. Shawn Matthias sure is hot. For the second straight game, he recorded two goals in a victory. The goals have also increased his goal streak to three games (five goals). The forward has a team-leading 14 on the season.

3.
Posting seven assists on the year coming into the game, Dmitry Kulikov was looking for his first goal. He picked a great time to register the third game-winner of his career (non shootout), scoring in overtime.

5.
After being put together last game and combining for six of the team's 11 points against Buffalo, the trio of Matthias, Jonathan Huberdeau and Peter Mueller continued their offensive outburst, recording five of the team's nine points.

25. With Tampa's Corey Conacher off, JHuberdeau had a chance to catch the Lightning forward for the rookie lead in points and he did just that, assisting on Matthias' first of the night and the game-winner for his NHL rookie leading 25th point of the season.

27.
It almost didn't happen but with Jacob Markstrom off for an extra skater, Matthias banged home a rebound with just 27 seconds left on the clock to tie the game at two.

Shawn Matthias
The star of the game for the second straight game. His first of the night tied it in the first. His second with less than a minute later even better.

2 Goals, 2 Points, 4 Shots, 17:52 TOI

The Panthers travel cross state to take on Southeast rivals Tampa Bay on Tuesday. It will be the fourth meeting between the two teams this season and the Panthers will look to get in the winning column for the first time as the Lightning won twice in regulation and once in overtime after coming back with a goal late in Sunrise to tie it at five. Tampa has replaced their head coach Guy Boucher since their last meeting on March 12 (a 3-2 Lightning win in Sunrise). AHL affiliate bench boss Jon Cooper took over and won his first game as head man in Tampa on Friday night as the Lightning came back to tie the game against New Jersey with a goal in the final minute before winning in the shootout 5-4. Tampa is led offenisvely by sniper Steven Stamkos who has 46 points (25 goals) in 34 games.
