The 2013 Florida Panthers Prospects Tournament began with an exciting matchup as the Boston Bruins took on the Tampa Bay Lightning, as the teams skated to a 5-5 tie in regulation and 1-1 tie in the shootout portion. Held at the Panthers practice facility at the Saveology.com Iceplex in Coral Springs, Fla. this meeting opened the six-game tournament schedule.

The game started with Boston holding possession for most of the first and taking a 1-0 into intermission after a goal from Anthony Camara. The second period saw momentum shift to the Lightning as they outscored the Bruins 2-1. The teams offenses really opened up in the final period with three goals from each team, ending regulation in a 5-5 tie. Trailing by two goals late in the third, Tampa got to within one before knotting the game with a power play tally that saw their netminder off for an extra attacker with less than a minute to play.

"It was the first game, not reading too much into these games," said Lightning Assistant GM Julian BriseBois. "They are just trying to put their best foot forward for boot camp."

Following the completion of the game, the teams held a five-player shootout. Jared Knight got Boston on the board in the fourth round and it looked like the Bruins would take the shootout but Vladislav Namestnikov answered on the final shot to once again put the result down as a tie.

Scoring for Boston were Camara, Zach Trotman, Alexander Khokhlachev and Maxime Villemaire who led the way in netting consecutive goals in the third period. Seth Griffith, Tommy Cross and Steven Spinell (78) led the team in assists with two each. Malcolm Subban (70) had 28 total saves from 33 shots-on-goal.

“First of all, I’m not trying to be physical, so that’s one of the first things that I’m trying to improve on because I’m a smaller guy,” said Griffith following a successful offensive game. “But I’ve got a lot to do. “

Scoring for Tampa Bay were Adam Erne , Nikita Kucherov, Danick Gauthier, Dan Milan and Tanner Richard. Namestnikov, Erne and Kucherov led the team in assists with two a piece. Kristers Gudlevskis (37) had 28 total saves from 33 shots-on-goal.

Q: What are your thoughts, just overall of the environment today and the competitive atmosphere that you faced against the Tampa Bay players?

A:
I thought there was a lot of good things I think out of today.  Obviously it was our first game together. So I thought a couple guys picked up on some...were pretty well at times. You know, obviously we had a few lulls that cost us today, but as far as you know, guys were sticking to the system and battling pretty hard.  It’s good.

Tampa Bay’s Jonathan Drouin

Q: Do you have any thoughts on, on how the game went?

A:
It went pretty well…It was just a normal game. Just getting used to (it). Our players is was kind of hard and it’s pretty chippy out there, but it was a good first game. We are learning and they did it very well.

Tampa Bay’s JT Brown

Q: Happy with the way things went today?

A:
Yeah, I mean there’s a lot of good things and a few things we could work on, I mean but besides that probably played very well…. If you’re 5 on 5 especially if you’re a lot of guys that haven’t played together much
