SUNRISE, FLA —  (NHL.com) - It was a long time coming, but Sean Bergenheim finally was able to make a difference for the Florida Panthers.

The left wing scored his first two goals in more than 20 months, and Tim Thomas made 38 saves when the Panthers defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 3-1 Monday at BB&T Center.

FULL RECAP

"It was a good win. That feels the best. We got the win. We were close in Calgary but now we got it and all in all just it feels good that we're heading in the right direction."

- Panthers forward Sean Bergenheim.

1. A Huge Kill: After a quick moving first period with limited whistles and 16 shots on goal combined, the Panthers found themselves in trouble early in the second period. There, they would have to kill off a 5-on-3 Flyers power play opportunity 1:06 in. First it was Scott Gomez going to the sin bin for tripping 29 seconds in. After Tim Thomas sprawled to make a save, Erik Gudbranson tried to clear the puck but instead tossed it out of play, giving Philadelphia a two man advantage for 1:23 and looking to get on the board. The Cats three penalty kill unit did a fantastic job limiting the Flyers just one shot on the two man advantage and killed off the five-on-four opportunity.

2. Bergy Time: The kill gave the Panthers momentum and they struck 29 seconds after Gudbranson returned to the ice. There, forward Sean Bergenheim scored on his second wrap-around attempt for his first goal of the season, sneaking the puck past Steve Mason with 3:35 gone in the period. The Finn made it a two-goal advantage for the Cats a little over 10 minutes later. With the Cats on the power play, Bergenheim would tip Marcel Goc's shot past Mason.

3. Thomas Shuts The Door: Bergenheim's two goals would be just enough as Thomas did the rest for the Panthers. The Cats netminder was especially strong in the final 20 minutes of play. Philadelphia pressed hard to get on the board and did so when Wayne Simmonds scored from in close with 7:06 gone for a power play goal but that's all he would allow as he made half of his saves (19) in the third period alone. The Panthers got some breathing room when Erik Gudbranson's bomb from inside the blueline bounced over Mason and past the goal line with 4:08 to play. The only downside of the big win was Bergenheim unable to pick up his second hat trick of his career despite the effort with the Flyers pulling their netminder for the extra attacker.

2. Defenseman Erik Gudbranson scored his first goal of the season and picked up an assist for the first multi-point game of his NHL career.

3. Netting his first two goals of the season, forward Sean Bergenheim recorded his third two-goal game in a Panthers uniform. It was his first goal since Mar. 20, 2012 (also against Philadelphia) and was one away from tying his career high.

5. In a game that saw 70 combined shots, only five skaters failed to join in on the shot parade. Scott Gomez and Mike Weaver were held off the shot sheet for the Cats while Nicklas Grossman, Adam Hall and Erik Gustafsson did not record a shot for the Flyers.

30. Blueliner Dylan Olsen had quite the first game in a Panthers uniform, picking up an assist and was plus-2 while playing 19:10 with three hits and two blocked shots. His 30 shifts were tied for third most on the Cats, one behind Brian Campbell and Erik Gudbranson.

38. Tim Thomas was busy man between the pipes, posting a Panthers career-high 38 saves on the night. That was one more than his previous high when he stopped 37 of 40 shots in a loss to Boston on Oct. 17.

After sitting out for a couple of games, Bergenheim played his second straight strong game and was rewarded with his first two goals of the season and first since 2012.

Thanksgiving hockey at the BB&T Center continues on Wednesday as the Panthers host the NY Rangers. Florida will look to avenge a tough 4-3 loss from their Nov. 10th trip to New York City as the Cats couldn't complete a comeback attempt after the Rangers scored twice early in the third to take a 4-2 lead. New York was blanked 5-0 in Tampa Bay Monday night and fall to 12-12-0 on the season. Offensively they're led by centers Brad Richards and Derek Stepan who have recorded 16 points in 24 games. Henrik Lundqvist has a 2.51 goals against average and .917 save percentage in 18 games between the pipes.
