SUNRISE —  (NHL.com) - Even another strong performance by Roberto Luongo wasn't enough to help the Florida Panthers beat the Boston Bruins.

Torey Krug broke a 1-1 tie at 7:38 of the third period and Patrice Bergeron had a goal and an assist to help the Bruins beat the Panthers for an eighth consecutive time in a 5-2 win Sunday at BB&T Center.

FULL RECAP

"They are still a benchmark, still a team we have to gauge ourselves against. They are a disciplined team by their system and attitude. They don't have panic to their game. They just keep working at it."

- Panthers interim head coach Peter Horachek.

1. Game II For Lu: Coming off a shutout against the Sabres in his return to the Panthers lineup, Roberto Luongo played a second straight strong game. For 40 minutes, he kept the lethal Boston offense at bay. The Bruins, despite playing the night before in Tampa, showed no signs of being tired as they kept the Panthers hemmed in for long periods of time. They outshot the Panthers 12-7 in the first, 15-8 in the second and 15-7 in the third. Despite the shot difference it was tied at one after two periods as No. 1 made some big saves, including a couple on Patrice Bergeron and Milan Lucic.

2. Jimmy Mays Hayes: The big Panthers forward had a big game for the Panthers, getting 16:21 time on ice and netting the Cats two goals. Hayes gave them the lead seven minutes into the second period as he scored from in close off the rebound of a Nick Bjugstad shot. The 6'6 winger then brought Florida to within 3-2 with the first multi-goal game of his NHL career when he scored from in close once again with 9:10 remaining in the third. The winger was all over the ice as evidence by his team leading five hits.

3. Quick Strike Bruins: Getting them to within one after the Bruins took a 3-1 lead less than a minute earlier, Florida couldn't stem the momentum as the Bruins came right back and regained the two goal lead 23 seconds after Hayes goal. Jerome Iginla skated in and scored on a blast top shelf with 7:37 remaining. That was enough to keep the Panthers from making a come back attempt as they added an empty netter with Luongo pulled for the extra skater with 1:08 remaining.

Memorable fan posts from the game.

Jeannine Stone: great game Lou & guys, next game...shake it off

Carlos Gustavo Dempaire: We played tonight as if boston was on a powerplay the whole game- theres so much a goalie can do-

Brendan Feingold: Great performance by Luongo overall. The constant pressure on him throughout the whole game unfortunately led to his collapse in the end.

2. Netting the two Panthers goals on the night, Jimmy Hayes collected his first two goal game of his NHL career and his third multi-point game.

4. Both teams were called for four minors in the game. Boston finished 2-for-4 on the power play while the Panthers failed to convert on their four opportunities.

6. Getting the Cats on the board in the second, Hayes set a career-high with his sixth goal of the season. Hayes netted five in 2011-12 in 31 games with the Hawks.

23. Florida had the game to within one but Boston recaptured their two goal cushion 23 seconds later as Jerome Iginla answered Hayes's second of the night in the third period.

28. Vinny Trocheck had a second straight strong game after making his NHL debut on Friday. He led all forwards with 22:27 of ice time and took 28 of the Panthers 70 face-offs, winning 54% of them (15-of-28).

Patrice Bergeron
The Bruins center helped set up the B's first two goals, picking up the second assist on each and then netted the game-winner in the third period on the power play.

1 Goal, 2 Assists, 3 Points, +2, 4 Shots, 18:51 TOI

The Panthers close out their three-game home stand on Tuesday as they host the Phoenix Coyotes. Phoenix currently sits three points out of the playoff race in the Western Conference with 69 points (29-24-11). They're led by forwards Mike Ribeiro and Radim Verbata as well as Keith Yandle who each have recorded 43 points. Canadian Olympian Mike Smith owns a 22-19-10 with a .913 save percentage and 2.72 GAA between the pipes.
