SUNRISE —  (NHL.com) - Roberto Luongo once again got the better of Cory Schneider.

Brad Boyes tied the game with a breakaway goal and set up Scottie Upshall's game-winner to lead the Florida Panthers past the New Jersey Devils 5-3 at BB&T Center on Friday night.

FULL RECAP

"I came out in the third and wanted to shut the door for the boys and was happy I got rewarded there with a couple of good goals. Guys don’t quit. We got some fresh young legs, they skate hard."

- Panthers goaltender Roberto Luongo.

1. Thing 1 vs Thing 2: It would have been a difficult task to find someone a year ago who would have been of the opinion that in March, 2014 Roberto Luongo would face-off in a regular season game against Cory Schneider and that the Vancouver Canucks name and logo would be nowhere to be found.

However, that was the case tonight as the two goalies dubbed “Thing 1” and “Thing 2” by Luongo in last season’s popular TSN web spoof took to the ice with their new clubs.

Luongo’s Panthers came out on top, with Luongo making 28 saves and getting the W over Schneider for the second time in a row. Each goalie had some big stops, highlighted by Luongo stoning Jaromir Jagr on a partial breakaway just moments into the third period.

The two former teammates will have a chance to renew acquaintances for a fourth time this season on March 31 when the Cats visit the Devils in their season series finale.

2. Youth vs Experience: The Devils lineup is layered with seasoned veterans including Patrik Elias, Ryane Clowe, Bryce Salvador, Michael Ryder and Marek Zidlicky along with future first ballot Hall of Famers Martin Brodeur and Jaromir Jagr.  All in all, six Devils players were born before 1980.  The Cats lineup meanwhile featured eight Young Guns who have yet to play a full NHL season.

Father Time and the Fountain of Youth battled back and forth all night. After Jagr got the Devils on the board at the end of the first with a powerplay marker from in close and Elias made it 2-1 early into the second, 22-year old Quinton Howden responded with his second goal in as many games for the Cats and 20-year old Jonathan Huberdeau picked up his second assist of the game.  And then, five minutes into the third, new father Brad Boyes (shout-out to baby Hunter!) tied things up at three. To top it all off, young Vincent Trocheck potted an empty netter with time running out for his first ever NHL goal to ice things for the Sunrise squad.

3. Huber-GO!: #11 in red was all over the ice against the Devils. A spin-o-rama during a neutral zone break-out in the third period was representative of how much Mr. Huberdeau was “feeling it”. He was instrumental in setting up the Cats first two goals, showing the type of skills that corralled him the Calder Trophy last year.

4. Picking up assists on the Panthers first two goals, Jonathan Huberdeau registered his fourth multi-point game of the season.

18. Brad Boyes netted his team-leading 18th of the season in tying the game at three. He added an assist later.

703. Tying the game at one, Jaromir Jagr netted his 703rd career goal, seventh most all-time and first among active skaters.

The forward tied the game at three with his team-leading 18th of the season early in the third then set up the game-winner about five minutes later.

The Luongo Reunion Tour continues on Sunday afternoon as the Panthers host the Vancouver Canucks in a 3 pm afternoon tilt.  It will be the first time that Luongo takes on his former teammates after spending over seven seasons in BC.  Panthers fans will see some familiar faces in the Canucks lineup, which features former Cats David Booth, Jason Garrison and Mike Santorelli in addition to the two players sent to Vancouver in the Luongo deal, Shawn Matthias and Jacob Markstrom.

Following Sunday’s game the Cats will head out west for a four-game road trip where they will take on the three California teams and the Phoenix Coyotes before returning back home for a three-game homestand against Ottawa (3/25), Carolina (3/27) and Montreal (3/29).
