SUNRISE —  (NHL.com) - Roberto Luongo saw a lot of familiar faces Sunday when he played the Vancouver Canucks for the first time since they traded him.

But it was one of the few players with whom he had never been teammates who helped the Canucks defeat Luongo and the Florida Panthers.

FULL RECAP

"It was fun for it to go to the shootout. Jensen made a great play. Perfect shot, bar and in so that was the difference. Eddie (Lack) made some big saves for them."

- Panthers goaltender Roberto Luongo.

1. Lu vs The Canucks: Reunion weekend finished up and unfortunately it wasn't like it began for Roberto Luongo. The Panthers netminder got the best of old friend Cory Schneider (now with the Devils) on Friday as the Cats stormed back to beat New Jersey 5-3. On Sunday, it was Luongo squaring off against the team he spent seven and a half seasons with, the Vancouver Canucks.

The Florida Panthers netminder said on Saturday he was excited to face off against his old squad and with an extra eye on it by the media, Luongo came up with some big saves on his former mates totaling 29 stops on the game. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough for the Cats to pull out the win.

2. Quick Succession: The Panthers and Canucks found the back of the net in quick succession at the end of the first period and then early in the third period Sunday afternoon. The three goals that got the offense rolling came within a two-minute span as Jimmy Hayes, Dan Hamhuis and Nicklas Jensen scored. In the third period the teams struck 1:34 seconds apart with Vincent Trocheck and Alexandre Burrows trading goals.

3. Young Gun Party: If Sunday afternoon is any indication of the future then the future will certainly be bright as the Panthers were led by their young guns. The 24-year old Hayes got the Cats on the board in the first and then Quinton Howden and Trocheck combined on a gritty, hardworking yet beautiful goal as Trocheck found the back of the net on the wraparound 4:19 into the third. Hayes came up with a big goal with 1:35 remaining to tie the game at three and send it to overtime where the Cats would pick up the point. Howden, Trocheck, Brandon Pirri and Nick Bjugstad were flying all over the ice as they put constant pressure on the Canucks all night long.

3. Rookie Quinton Howden set up the Panthers second goal, stretching his point streak to three games (2-1-3).

5. Collecting two assists on the night, Brandon Pirri has five points (2-3-5) in his last four games.

6. Netting his eighth and ninth goals of the season, Hayes has recorded six points (4-2-6) in his last five games for the Cats.

23:54. Tying the game at two, rookie Vincent Trocheck scored in his second straight game. The center led all Panthers forwards with 23:54 of ice time, two minutes more than the next highest forward.

127. The Panthers and Canucks combined for three goals in 127 seconds (2:07) late in the first period.

Alexandre Burrows
The Canucks forward had a hand in all three of their regulation goals, assisting on the first two and then scoring the third to give them a 3-2 lead.

1 Goal, 1 Assist, 2 Points, +2, 1 Shot, 21:19 TOI

Florida hits the west coast for a four-game road trip as they take on the three California teams and the Phoenix Coyotes before returning back home for a three-game homestand against Ottawa (3/25), Carolina (3/27) and Montreal (3/29). The trip begins Tuesday with a game against the San Jose Sharks. San Jose sits in second place in the Pacific with 95 points, two behind the Ducks, and are led offensively by Joe Pavelski (66 points in 68 games), Joe Thornton (65 points in 68 games) and Patrick Marleau (60 points in 68 games).
