Hayes and Fleischmann score for the Cats but the Ducks skate away with the victory.

DUCKS 6, PANTHERS 2

On the heels of their 6-2 loss to the Anaheim Ducks, the Florida Panthers return to South Florida with their final west coast trip of the season firmly in the books. The four-game road trip pitted the Cats against some of the league’s top title contenders as Florida faced San Jose, Phoenix, Los Angeles and Anaheim in a grueling span of six days.

Here is what you may have missed from last night:

Barch Madness

With the Panthers down 3-0 in the second period, it took a seemingly toothless shot from forward Krys Barch to get the Cats going. It appeared that the physical forward had his first goal of the season until the score was later credited to big Jimmy Hayes, who got a piece of the puck while blocking out the sun in front of Ducks netminder Jonas Hiller.

But then he goes and does this…

And you realize that while he may look like your son’s t-ball coach, that dude can sure play some puck.

Ducks Fly Together

After the Ducks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second, it looked like the game was in the books, but the Panthers had other ideas. Goals from Jimmy Hayes and Tomas Fleischmann in a two-minute span brought the Cats within one and sent the Ducks scrambling. In an attempt to get his team back on track, head coach Bruce Boudreau called a time out. Whatever he said must have worked, as Anaheim came right out and scored a pair of their own to stretch the lead to 5-2.

I’m thinking Bruce must have given the team the old ‘ducks fly together’ bit.

One thing is for sure, they definitely wrapped things up with a ‘quack-quack’. I’m sure Boudreau was not asking the boys if they want some ice-cream…

Sharks, Ducks or Kings?

One of the most interesting storylines the rest of the way will be who comes out of the loaded Western Conference. It’s hard not to be impressed after taking in the Sharks, Kings and Ducks over the past week. It is going to be fun watching these teams go head-to-head in the playoffs and there are sure to be some legendary battles between the front line scoring talent of the Sharks and Ducks, and the stifling defense of the Kings.

What’s Next?

The Panthers are back in the comfy confines of BB&T Center this week as they kick off a three-game homestand on Tuesday against the Ottawa Senators. Florida faces Carolina on Thursday and Montreal on Saturday before heading to the Northeast next week to take on the Devils and Islanders.
