Panthers prospects helped their teams into the second round of their respective CHL playoffs.

Cats Prospects: CHL Playoff Update
Panthers prospects helped their teams into the second round of their respective CHL playoffs.

Panthers prospects are cleaning up on both sides of the border. In addition to the four prospects competing in the NCAA Frozen Four, the Cats have a number of talented youngsters participating in the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) playoffs. With the first rounds all but finished, here is a quick update on where everyone stands:

QMJHL:

(2) Halifax Mooseheads def. (15) Charlottetown Islanders 4-0

Halifax glided through their first round matchup against Charlottetown as the Mooseheads outscored the Islanders 28-8 in a four-game sweep. Florida’s 2013 seventh round draft pick MacKenzie Weegar was instrumental in the sweep as the Moosheads defenseman recorded two goals and six assists in the four games against Charlottetown.

The Moosheads will move on to face the eight seed Gatineau Olympiques in the quarterfinals. The series gets underway this Friday.

(5) Blainville-Boisbriand Armada def. (12) Moncton Wildcats 4-2

After leading the Armada in scoring during the regular season with 62 points (26-36-62), Florida’s 2013 fifth round draft pick, Christopher Clapperton, tallied five assists in his team’s playoff series victory over the Moncton Wildcats. The Wildcats made it a series, defeating the Armada twice, but in the end the Armada had too much firepower as they wrapped up the series in six games.

The Armada will take on the four seed Rimouski Oceanic starting on Thursday.

(10) Rouyn-Noranda Huskies def. (7) Quebec Remparts 4-1

The Huskies pulled off a minor upset dispatching the Quebec Remparts in just five games. LW Francis Beauvillier (6th round, 2012) contributed to the victory with two goals and four assists in the five game series. Rouyn-Noranda will have to capture some more of that magic as they move on to face the top seeded Baie-Comeau Drakkar in the quarterfinals.

WHL:

(4) Seattle Thunderbirds def. (5) Everett Silvertips 4-1

The Thunderbirds got off to a fast start on the road to the Ed Chynoweth Cup as they took care of the Silvertips in five games. F Alexander Delnov (4th round, 2012) scored one goal in the series, helping Seattle advance to the quarterfinals where they will take on the top seed Kelowna Rockets. The Rockets will be a tough out as the team finished the regular season with a record of 57-11-0-4 before taking care of their first round opponent, the Tri-City Americans, in five games.

(3) Victoria Royals def. (6) Spokane Chiefs 4-0

Steven Hodges, a third round Panthers draft pick in 2012, was helper happy in the Royals four game sweep of the Chiefs. The 19-year-old center racked up four assists in the first round dismantling. Hodges tallied 21 goals and 26 assists this season, his third year with the Royals.

Up next are the second seeded Portland Winterhawks who are coming off a first round sweep of their own. The quarterfinal series will kick off on Friday.

OHL:

(1) Oshawa Generals def. (8) Mississauga Steelheads 4-0

After cruising to the top of the Eastern Conference with a regular season record of 42-20-0-6, the Generals continued their domination of the OHL with their four game sweep of the Mississauga Steelheads. Generals team captain Josh Brown (6th round, 2013) was limited to just two games due to injury, but Oshawa still had enough firepower to take down the Steelheads.
