About Last Night: Flyers 5, Panthers 2

ABOUT LAST NIGHT is the morning-after recap of last night’s Florida Panthers game produced by “Hockey Pat” McGrath, a lifelong Cats fan who previously wrote for the Florida Panthers themed blog “TheRatTrick”. It is a followup to Hockey Pat’s hilariously informative gameday article: THE LOWDOWN.

The contents of ABOUT LAST NIGHT and all opinions expressed therein are solely those of Hockey Pat and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Florida Panthers or Sunrise Sports & Entertainment LLC. Having said that, if you find yourself laughing or smiling as you read ABOUT LAST NIGHT, feel free to thank us. We accept thank you notes, tweets and ticket purchases.

The Florida Panthers had plenty of chances but struggled to find twine last night and were dropped by the Philadelphia Flyers 5-2. The Panthers outshot Philly 40-27 but Flyers’ netminder Steve Mason was on his game, turning away 38 of the pucks sent his way en route to a playoff-spot clinching win for the Flyers.

Here is what you may have missed from last night:

Tweet of the Night

Fade Away!!

Hockey is a funny game sometimes. With all the blasts Gudbranson fires from the blue line, it is the wrist shot he takes with his momentum going backwards that finds the back of the net. Guddy had to have called ‘Kobe’ on this one.

Finishing Strong

Before making his return to the ice after an upper body injury sidelined him for 11 games, Jonathan Huberdeau talked about his desire to have a strong finish to the season. So far he is off to a good start as the 20-year-old scored his ninth of the year thanks to a power move to protect the puck from Flyers defenseman Mark Streit.

If that is not a strong finish then I don’t know what is.

Stone Mason

The Panthers fired a ton of rubber towards Philadelphia goaltender Mason but the first-year Flyer gobbled up just about everything the Cats sent his way. Mason came up especially huge in the third period as Florida outshot the Flyers 16-3 but could not solve Mason more than twice.

Milestone Watch

With his assist on Huberdeau’s goal, Jesse Winchester notched his 50th career helper. The assist also gave Winch his 18th point of the season (9-9-18) tying a career high set in 2008-09 (3-15-18).

Up Next

The Cats continue their season ending homestand on Thursday when the Toronto Maple Leafs come to town. They wrap up their season on Saturday against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
