Canada and the United States were back in action on Thursday after two days off at the IIHF World Championship in Belarus.

Canada (3-0-1-0) used a four goal third period, including a goal from Panthers forward Jonathan Huberdeau, to defeat Denmark 6-1 for their third straight victory. The United States (2-0-0-2) lost their second straight, falling 6-5 to Latvia in a back-and-forth scoring affair.

In a game that saw eleven total goals scored, the United States repeatedly battled back from deficits but could not overcome the Latvian attack.

Down 3-1 in the second period, the U.S. received goals from Brock Nelson and Tyler Johnson to even the score at two heading into the third. The Americans fell behind again early in the third only to tie the score at four goals apiece thanks to a Kevin Hayes goal 13:26 into the final frame. Latvia would score twice more to extend their lead to 6-4. The Americans cut the lead to one thanks to Nelson’s second of the game but were unable to find the equalizer.

Jimmy Hayes finished with 8:02 of ice time. Vincent Trocheck tallied a shot on goal on 6:56 of ice time while Drew Shore finished with 5:09 of ice time. The Americans return to action on Friday as they take on Kazakhstan.

The Canadians continued their strong play by topping Denmark for their third straight win. It was a one goal game until a four goal third period outburst sealed the 6-1 win for the Red and White.

The two teams were knotted at a goal apiece after trading first period goals. Cody Hodgson gave Canada a 2-1 lead with his second goal of the game at 5:03 into the second period. The third period was all Canada as the team received a pair from Matt Read while Huberdeau notched his first of the tournament and Hodgson completed his hat-trick to close out the scoring.

In addition to the goal, Huberdeau recorded four shots on net, was a +2 and recorded 12:45 of ice time. Erik Gudbranson tallied one shot and was +1 in 13:02 of ice time. Canada will next battle Italy on Friday.
