On Ice Sessions, Groups and more on Day Two of Development Camp

Day two of Panthers Development Camp consisted of two on-ice sessions with the players again split into groups. On Monday, the attendees were split into a Red Team and a Blue Team but on Tuesday, the teams were mixed up, with each session consisting of players from both teams.

The morning got underway at 9 a.m. with the goalies getting on the ice first for some work with goalie coach, Robb Tallas. The first session goalies were Colin Stevens and Hugo Fagerblom. Taken in the seventh round (182nd overall) at the 2014 Draft, Fagerblom did not skate on Monday, so when he took the ice today he drew chorus of oohs and ahs from the media due to his impressive 6’6” frame.

The first group consisted of both local players, D Colin Suellentrop and F Cody Payne, both players from Union College, G Colin Stevens and F Mike Vecchione as well as 2014 draft picks F Joe Wegwerth, F Miguel Fidler and G Hugo Fagerblom.

Group two was highlighted by forwards, Aleksander Barkov, Vincent Trocheck, Rocco Grimaldi, and defenseman Aaron Ekblad.

The on-ice sessions were similar to Monday’s with a lot of passing drills and full-ice shooting drills. The groups also did some corner drills that focused on quickly retrieving the puck from the corner and getting a shot on goal.

The on-ice sessions were capped off with a bit of excitement as the groups took part in about ten minutes of 3-on-3’s with the goals set up along the width of the ice in one of the offensive zones.

Following the morning practices, the players headed to Whole Foods to learn about nutrition and healthy eating. There will be no on-ice sessions tomorrow, as the players will be heading to the beach for an outdoor workout.

Quick Hits

· In the second session, Aaron Ekblad drew a huge applause from the crowd when he fired a pretty shot top-shelf during the 3-on-3.

· 2014 second round pick, Jayce Hawryluk looked confident during the second session and was not afraid to throw his 5’10” frame around during 3-on-3’s. He also fired home a nifty goal during the drill.

· The second session ended with a brief shootout where Aleksander Barkov showed off his vast arsenal, scoring on both his attempts. Also scoring in the shootout was F Zach Hyman and D MacKenzie Weegar.

·  As session two wrapped up, Ekblad, Weegar and Grimaldi put on a show as they tried to flip pucks into a bucket, eventually ricocheting one high off the glass and right into the bucket, much to the excitement of the spectators.

“Our future is very bright in this organization, so to have this opportunity to be able to work with first-rounders, second-rounders that are elite players, even our sixth, seventh-rounders they are not only great hockey players but they are fabulous people.”
