PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Florida rookie Nathan Horton didn't realize he was making history.

Horton became the youngest NHL player to score on a penalty shot and added another goal in the Panthers' 4-3 overtime win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday night.

"It's pretty neat, but I never knew about it," said Horton, who learned of his achievement between the second and third periods.

Valeri Bure scored the winner for the Panthers with 2:04 left in overtime on a slap shot from the left circle that sailed high over the glove of Philadelphia goaltender Jeff Hackett.

Horton, the Panthers' top choice in the 2003 draft, tied it at 2 with his penalty shot at 3:38 of the second period, beating Hackett high to the glove side. Horton scored after being taken down by Philadelphia's John LeClair.

"It happened so fast, I didn't have enough time to think about the shot," Horton explained. "If I had more time, I might have been more nervous. I was either going to go high or go to my backhand. The top shelf was there, so I went up and it went in."

Horton, who is 18 years, 224 days old, was 38 days younger than Toronto's Jack Hamilton, who set the record in 1944, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

"He did what good penalty shot people do," Florida coach Rick Dudley said. "He waited until the goaltender made a move. The kid backed up a little bit and he tacked it top shelf. Every time you see him you see something different."

"I didn't hook him," LeClair said. "I know I just pushed him. I was trying to push his hands to try to push the puck off his stick."

Horton assisted on a goal by Mathieu Biron that put the Panthers ahead 3-2 with 1:40 left in the second period. Horton, skating down on a rush, threaded a pass to Biron, who scored from the slot.

LeClair tied it at 3 at 3:27 of the third period with a one-timer from the slot.

Radovan Somik and Jeremy Roenick also scored for the Flyers, who went into the game with a 13-3-2 home record and outshot the Panthers 49-19. Philadelphia is winless in its last three (0-2-1).

"Pretty disappointing," Philadelphia coach Ken Hitchcock said. "We have to find ways to win these games. We had a lot of quality chances, we did a lot of things right. You have to bear down to win these types of games."

Somik put the Flyers ahead 1-0 at 2:41 of the first period when his wraparound shot to the right of Florida goaltender Roberto Luongo bounced off Panthers defenseman Pavel Trnka's right skate into the net.

The Panthers tied it at 10:15 of the period when Biron's shot from the point was deflected into the goal by Horton.

The Flyers made it 2-1 on a power-play goal scored by Roenick in a scramble in front of the net at 15:45.

Luongo was stunned when he was hit on the left side of his face with a shot through a screen by Philadelphia's Justin Williams at 10:56 of the first period but stayed in the game.
