Cats Win Fifth Straight Road Game
Associated Press

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) -Stephen Weiss is a team-first player.

Weiss scored the lone shootout goal to give the Florida Panthers a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Flames on Friday night.

"I don't care if I'm getting the winners," said Weiss, who also had the deciding goals in a 2-0 win in Edmonton on Thursday night and a 4-3 victory in Ottawa last Monday night. "It doesn't matter who, as long as we're winning games. That's the most important thing. It's certainly not a one-man show by any means."

Weiss made a deke to the backhand before slipping the puck through Miikka Kiprusoff's pads. Tomas Vokoun made 17 of his 35 saves in the third period, and turned aside all three Calgary shooters in the tiebreaker.

"It started with Tomas Vokoun tonight," Florida coach Peter DeBoer said. "He was outstanding for us. I think the guys kind of fed of his energy."

Florida has won three straight and five in a row on the road to improve to 14-12-3.

"It's a true team effort over the last few weeks to keep this thing going and get ourselves out of the hole we dug a little earlier in the season," Weiss said.

Kamil Kreps doubled his points total with a goal - his first in 22 games this season - and an assist, and Jay Bouwmeester also scored for Florida.

"It's more like 50 pounds off my back," Kreps said.

The victory was the Panthers' first over Calgary since Nov. 9, 2002, and the first at the Saddledome since Nov. 6, 1999.

Rene Bourque scored twice for Calgary.

"We had our chances in overtime and in the third and we just didn't capitalize in the shootout and that was the difference," Bourque said.

The Flames have lost three straight to fall to 16-11-3.

Bourque was credited with the game's first goal at 16:07 of the first period when Weiss inadvertently tipped a pass on net and past Vokoun.

"I felt bad for Tomas just because that's a tough one to go in early," Weiss said. "It happens, but it feels good to get it back."

Less than 2 minutes later, Kreps tied it with a short-handed goal. He stole the puck from Mark Giordano at the Calgary blue line, skated the length of the ice and deked Kiprusoff for his first goal of the season.

The Panthers took a 2-1 lead at 1:45 of the second when Bouwmeester's point shot appeared to hit something in front of the net got past Kiprusoff.

Just 1:27 later, the Flames drew even when Bourque tapped a no-look, behind-the-back pass from Curtis Glencross past Vokoun, who was looking the wrong way.

"I got a lucky first one and then Glennie made a nice play on my second goal, an unbelievable pass," Bourque said. "The goalie wasn't even ready for it."

Later in the second, Vokoun made a nice blocker save off of a close-in attempt by Todd Bertuzzi, who was looking to break out of a 17-game scoring drought.

Kiprusoff finished with 27 saves.

Notes: Calgary defenseman Adrian Aucoin played his 800th NHL game. ... Calgary defenseman Adam Pardy earned his first NHL point with an assist on Bourque's second goal of the game. ... Calgary was the last NHL team this season to play in a shootout.
