SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - The New York Islanders made quick work of the free-falling Florida Panthers in the third period.

Shawn Bates scored two goals to help the Islanders hand the Panthers their 11th straight loss, 5-3 on Saturday night.

Miroslav Satan, Oleg Kvasha and Mark Parrish also scored for New York, and Rick DiPietro made 25 saves in the Islanders' third victory on their four-game trip.

``This is the difference between a mediocre road trip and a great road trip,'' DiPietro said. ``We didn't like to close out a game like that in the third but we'll take the two points and go home.''

Kristian Huselius, Gary Roberts and Olli Jokinen scored for Florida, and Roberto Luongo stopped 23 shots.

The Panthers' 11-game losing streak is their longest since a team-record 13-game slide from Feb. 7-March 23, 1998. Florida hasn't won since Oct. 25 at Pittsburgh.

``It was disappointing,'' Panthers coach Jacques Martin said. ``Once again we got into trouble when we took penalties. You have to give them credit, they got to the front of the net.We have to be able to box them out.''

New York scored twice in a 17-second span in the third period to make it 4-1. Kvasha scored off a round at 4:03, and Bates took a pass from Jason Blake to the right of the crease and pushed the puck past Luongo at 4:20.

``It took us a while but we finally got going,'' Chris Campoli said.

Bates left the game with 1:14 left after he collided along the boards with Florida's Martin Gelinas. A team spokesman said it was a hamstring injury and Bates was on crutches in the locker room.

The Islanders made it 5-1 at 5:47 on Parrish's goal.

``This team has a lot more passion and more offense from a lot of guys,'' Islanders coach Steve Stirling said. ``Our coaching staff made a decision to back off I told them to have fun and just play the game. The players responded.''

Roberts scored his 400th career goal at 11:13, and Jokinen followed with 2:01 left.

``We were trying to make a comeback,'' Jokinen said. ``It was embarrassing for us until we got a couple of goals.''

The Islanders took a 2-1 lead late in the second. With Luongo screened by Trent Hunter, Bates scored on a shot from the left circle.

New York tied it at 1 on Satan's power-play goal from the top of the left circle at 11:28 of the first. The Panthers opened the scoring when Huselius fired a shot from the right circle that went between DiPietro's pads at 6:23.

Notes: The Panthers acquired Russian defenseman Alexei Semenov from the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday for a conditional 2006 draft pick. The 24-year-old Semenov, 6-foot-6 and 235 pounds, had a goal and an assist in 11 games for the Oilers this season. He has four goals and 14 assists in 103 career NHL games, all with Edmonton.
