Just a week ago, the Panthers were thinking they could skate off the ice at BankAtlantic Center after their final home game with a victory, 87 points, and smack in the middle of the playoff hunt with three road games remaining.

Unfortunately, the hockey Gods can be cruel. So can the Capitals.

Alex Ovechkin had a goal and an assist and Viktor Kozlov had a goal and two assists as the Panthers were shut out Saturday evening 3-0 before a faithful crowd of 17,832 on Fan Appreciation Night.

The line of Stephen Weiss, Nathan Horton and David Booth, which had been so solid the past month, was a minus-three on the evening as was defenseman Karlis Skrastins.

“It really hurts to finish the year at home like this, especially when you lose 3-0,” Booth said. “We have to shut down their top line. If we do our job, we win the game, I think.”

Weiss called his performance “just bad.”

“Two goals were my fault,” Weiss said. “The other two guys (Horton and Booth) played hard. I didn’t play well.”

Olli Jokinen, who took four shots on Capitals’ goalie Cristobal Huet, added; “We just couldn’t find a way to score.”

Quote of the Game
"We have three games to go. We owe it to ourselves and our fans to play hard. It’s tough, but we have to show some pride and play for the franchise. We’ve got to find a way to be motivated.”

2. Viktor Kozlov
3. Mike Green
After a scoreless first period, the Capitals got on the board at 2:48 of the second period when Kozlov snapped a one-timer past Tomas Vokoun (30 saves). Mike Green added a second goal at 14:42 of the second period before Alex Ovechkin scored goal No. 62 on the season in the third.

“It’s a disappointing,” said GM and coach Jacques Martin. “We thought we had a good chance to make the playoffs this season. Lately, the play hasn’t been enough…Under pressure, we just haven’t performed.”

Players were asked if it was tough to be motivated.

“It’s definitely not the position we want to be in,” Weiss said. “You play 82 games and not to make the playoffs…it’s kind of tough.”

The Panthers did have five power plays on the night, they hit the post a few times, and Jozef Stumpel had a breakaway. But these days nothing seems to be going well for the Panthers.

But there’s three games remaining in the 2007-08 season. The Panthers need to get it together for games at Atlanta (Tuesday), Carolina (Friday) and Washington (Saturday).

We have three games to go,” Jokinen said. “We owe it to ourselves and our fans to play hard. It’s tough, but we have to show some pride and play for the franchise. We’ve got to find a way to be motivated.”

NOTES
Cory Murphy was a healthy scratch on defense along with Branislav Mezei. Martin said he scratched Murphy because Washington is a big team and he wanted to shake up the power play. With Murphy out, Steve Montador was moved to the blue line…The Panthers can still set a franchise record with another win on the road. Their 18 road wins ties the club record set during the 1993-94 inaugural season…
